I have 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE (So 8" infotainment Screen + Non JBL)

Since 2023 parting out market is opening up out there, I've been browsing.

Found few different models of Infotainment systems.

North American
8" basic model: 86140-0R630 [Denso]

10.5" Non-JBL (TRD only): 86140-0R710 [Denso]

10.5" JBL (XLE Premium/XSE/Limited): 86140-0R640 [Denso]

----
Japanese
8" basic model 86140-42L60 [Denso]
---
European
10.5" Non-JBL 86140-42L00 [Panasonic]

Image

American 86140-0R710 (Non-JBL 10"5 from RAV4 TRD) / Europeans 86140-42L00 (Non-JBL 10.5" from Israel RAV4 Hybrid)

Does any one know what those connectors do? I assume wireless module? Maybe US one is for AT&T one, and European is whatever they use.

I don't know why they made the connector different. It's frustrating. I found European one for really good price... Damn.

Do youguys think the head unit will work without those circled connector plugged? Anyone has any clue what that port is for?

Could be wrong, but I believe those are antenna ports. Are those pictures of a North America model or an overseas model?

Is one of the pictures your Headunit out of your car? If so have you tried unplugging that one connection and seeing if it works/has errors?

Here is an organized chart of what I researched about 2023+ RAV4s Radio Units so far. I will update if I figure out more and please let me know more model numbers/specs.

So what I found out is that European market RAV4s are built in Japan. and Luckily I have Japanese one. Japanese suppliers make 86140-42Lxx.

North American RAV4s are made in Canada/Mexico/US (and imported from Japan). and NA suppliers make 86140-0Rxxx

Hello, I found this other Panasonic 10.2" reference for you (86140-42M90) while I was looking for one of these new units for my Advance RAV4 Hybrid 2020 (EUR but Japan made. And yes, although it is 2020 I am trying to see if it is possible to update the new LCD cluster, both the new screen.
And I would like to know what happened a few days later with your installation.

Not only 10.5 Unit doesn't work, now I swapped back to 8 inch screen, and it doesn't work either.

COMPLETELY ZERO POWER. It doesn't even boot.

iPhone can't detect Apple Carplay/Bluetooth But Toyota Connect still works (I can lock/unlock/remote start)

  • Checked 15A Radio fuse, it's not blown.

  • Disconnected negative cable out and connected again after 30 minutes to reset ECU, still doesn't work.

  • Did the reverse method [Where you put car on accessary/ignition mode then put the car in Reverse] but it doesn't work.
I think this method only works when the head unit keep resets itself, but my head units literally get ZERO power.

I'm not sure if there is a security feature that if someone mess with Headunit it locks itself out.

I just hope I didn't break 2 expensive headunits. Hopefully it's some random blown fuse.

Once I'm off from work today, I'm gonna use my voltmeter to check all fuses.

To my knowledge you're the first one to begin tinkering with replacing the 21MM ('23-'24) Headunit. Others have done it here with the 19MM ('20-'22) system (moving from 7 inch to 8 inch).

Good luck to you and please keep sharing information here on your findings, it will no doubt help others down the line.

so im really curious if anyone has done this too. im in Australia, I currently have the 8 inch screen, and the local car wrecker has the 10 inch screen for sale. I looked at all the plugs and they all match up (maybe missing a few wires) but in terms of all the plugs its all like for like. So Im curious if the 10 inch screen will turn on and would the navigation work on it.

Hi,

Hi. FORGET head units meant for non-USA/Canada Toyotas! The 86140-42L00 lacks Sirius, has NO AM reception and has a DAB+ digital receiver (signals on the UHF band) that is absolutely useless in North America. I’ve been busy getting my 86140-42L00 replaced by an Australian RAV4 head unit that still has AM and is fully compatible for use in Europe. Remember, frequency steps on AM and FM and anywhere else on the globe are DIFFERENT from the frequeny steps in the Americas! That means that an American 86140-XXXXX won’t be able to tune in accurately on AM and FM stations in Europe. And, consequently, the other way around as well. And to make things worse, cable harnesses may differ as well. So, knowing this, you might get a replacement 10’5 head unit for your car from a totalled USA-specs car. Physically they all will fit but make sure the plugs in your RAV4 will fit the replacement head unit. Be sure to get an original OEM part. Aftermarket stuff will ALWAYS be a compromise as it is possible (likely rather) some things will not work. Let alone the unknown reputation of non-OEM products that MIGHT fit. And last but not least, do not alter any original wire harnesses in attempts to make an aftermarket head unit fit the car. If your car is still under warranty, any changes that are not authorised by Toyota will invalidate warrenty, period. No excuses.

Head units these days are very much integrated in a car’s systems. Professional car audio retailers won’t replace modern head units, even a replacement by units from reputable brands like Alpine, because it is not sure everything will work. Camera systems are notoriously known for not or only partly functioning and over the air updates may no longer function. There you go…..As much as I hate having to live with my existing head unit, I gave up this battle. Only because you will get more problems than you have now with your existing unit. Bye, Willem, The Netherlands.

This is totally true.

I got European 10.5 headunit to my Japanese RAV4. FInally got it to work.
Radio and Map doesn't work. (As you see on the photo above, it's all black) - Doesn't let me set up driver profile.

So I'm stuck with some white lady's Toyota profile who used 10.5 screen previously.

However, I only use Apple Car Play, which works flawlessly. So no biggie for me.

Honestly, 80% of us will use Apple Carplay/Android auto, it works.

So if you have 23+ Rav4 just buy whatever 10.5 unit you can get, and slap it on! It's plug and play!
