i keep the old Serpentine Belt in the rear compartment as an emergency spare if it is not too bad of shape. hard to find a belt in the middle of no place or in the middle of the night.
:)
About 10 years ago, when I had an Elantra, in order not to get into a difficult situation "in the middle of no place or in the middle of the night:", I bought and put a spare belt (6PK1255) in the trunk. But it never needed to. :) Later I sold the Elantra and bought a RAV4.4 and it turned out that the belt fits perfectly on the RAV4.
But now I think, is it possible to hope for a belt that has lain for so long? :)

it is to be as an emergency spare.
so it is to get you to a place where you can get a new belt.
or get you home.

or just replace the belt every 4 years of hard service.
most belts are only good for 5 years in hard service, maybe 10 in light service if car is stored inside.

Hi. I'm a new user and recently began taking care of an 09 Rav4. There doesn't seem to be a FAQs type section in the forums, so I'm posting this to document a hack to help change the accessory belt.

I couldn't figure out how to position pry bars from above, as suggested in other posts, so I removed the passenger's wheel and worked from above and below. The new belt was really tight, so to free my hands, I used a 14mm combination wrench on the lower tensioner adjustment point, and used a few zip ties using a frame member, towards the back of the wheel well, to hold the tension. This worked great, so for anyone who doesn't have access to a tensioner tool, or is having issues getting the belt on, this will buy some time for patience. Put the belt around the outer pulleys, crank, AC, and alternator, first.

Also, I found the belt had to be centered on the pulleys to provide enough room to slip it over the water pump pulley. So, working iteratively worked for me. I didn't use leather gloves, but they would be helpful in pushing the belt over the pulleys.

If that worked for you, that's great! I just replaced my Camry's belt and tensioner last week. I didn't need to go to this extreme - working from the top I wrapped the belt where it should go and used a 14mm socket and ratchet and it allowed the tensioner to move more than enough to slip the belt on the last few ribs. For me it was one of the easier ones to get the belt on...other vehicles I've owned the tensioner wouldn't seem to move enough.

If you are replacing the belt - you are better off doing everything while you have access to these:
Belt - of course
replace belt tensioner
replace water pump - they do go bad around 120k miles - check weep hole

And - flush/replace coolant - it is at 120k miles anyway.
