I try to avoid dealers/shops but with a Prime it has to be lifted here in NY for the state inspection. Probably best to go to the dealer for something like this should they damage the battery when lifting.

tires rotation need balancing....therefore rotation at home....is not recommended!!!
Huh, never knew that. I know tires need to be balanced when newly installed or when flat repaired or if shimmy detected but not when tires rotated. How can rotating tires mounted on rims possibly affect balance.

That's a new one to me too and I've been doing car repairs and maintenance for over 40 years.
I have seen tire rims checked for trueness and had 4 out of measurement enough to need replacement in the last 10 years. Done on a tire balancing device with a piece of wood held at a beginning distance from the edge of the rim and seeing if as the tire rotated the wood was a constant distance from the rim. But both times this was detected was at tire replacement.

Yes it is possible a wheel weight came off and detecting that while swapping the tires would be a good thing but is not common.

Most garages will insist on balancing tires when performing rotations as part of their basic safety and quality protocols. If you are rotating your own tires, however, the choice “to balance or not to balance” is up to you.....we cannot do all DIY...is very simple....safety first!!!

Well that's a cut and paste comment from the internet. There's also alot of opinions on the internet that it's not a given necessary function of every tire rotation.

In nearly 70 years of driving, I have never had a shop tell me the tires should be balanced when rotated -- the dealer, Discount Tires, Costco tires, etc.

Balancing is not needed when rotating unless there is a balance problem.

It pays to purchase from a dealer you trust...
In my case, it was purchasing my '24 RAV4 SE from a dealership that didn't mark up the price $5,000 over MSRP. That said, I do all my own work as I've had too many issues with the dealers. Examples- Overcharging, Oil stains, overfilling, stripped and overtightened lugs and have caught the service writers in blatant lies!

BOTH Discount Tires and Les Swab routinely balance all 4 tires when you get a free rotation on tires purchased from them. You don't have to ask them to do it--they just do it as part of their standard procedure whether the car needs it or not.

I have winter tires and rims for our vehicles and change them each spring and fall. Usually change them at my brother in laws auto repair shop and throw them on the balancer to check balance and rim runout just because machine is readily available. Done this for many years and our vehicles have been used on very rough paved and gravel roads and have never needed rebalancing. While a wheel vibration should be checked ASAP to find cause, checking balance when rotating tires, especially if cost and time is involved is a waste of time and money in my opinion.

Respectfully disagree, but I don't get my tires from the dealership. Discount Tire rotates and balances every 6k miles. Technically, I know they rotate, but if there isn't any obvious vibration or what not, no need to balance.

Dealerships? I'd mark the tires on the inside to verify they actually did what they said they were going to do.

for the record, losing a wheel weight is going to make a HUGE driving opportunity.

Sorry, this is simply incorrect. A shop may check the balance as part of their procedure, but it's unlikely a tire is going to need to be balanced. For example, Discount Tire is a well oiled machine. Every 6k miles I take my car in for rotation/balance. The balance is simply a QC issue for them. Besides, they can do it so quickly, it makes sense.

I'm sure dealers can install/balance and rotate, but I would not go to the dealer for just that.
