Hello all. Thank you for all the great feedback. My update; on Tuesday 9/12, I get a call from the dealer- a guy who tells me he is new to the service department but has been in sales for years and is trying other aspects of the dealership. He apologizes and tells me they don't know what is wrong with the car and wants to know what options I had considered. We talk and the notation from someones prior comment "the dealership is not your friend" echoed in my head. I was very frank that i didnt want to have to pay for a new vehicle and wanted Toyota to make good on this vehilcle, he gave me the "let me see what I can do on my end". (The salesman coming out, I thought) Anyway, at the same time I'm waiting on a return call from NA Toyota customer service. On the late afternoon of that same day, the customer service rep from NA Toyota calls and we speak about what our expectations and concerns are. We agree to submit the paperwork for Toyota to consider a buyback of our car and replacement. Interestingly, 2 days later, the dealership calls us to inform us our car is ready to be picked up. The reason provided for the car issues was 2 bad spark plugs. 2 bad spark plugs? 2 TAS and 24 days in the shop for bad spark plugs? Anyway, we have continued the Toyota request for replacement vehicle. If for no other reason a track record and paper trail should this become a legal issue. I will follow as things happen.

You have a cracked block or head, or some other major internal damage from the water pump failure. This led to another failure of a gasket or component that led to a leak of coolant in 'EV system' or whatever was discussed before. Now you have coolant leaking into spark plug chambers most likely... oh geez...

Just for sh*ts and giggles, ask the service guy if you can come by and look at the spark plugs. No guarantee they won't show you another set, but just to get them on line to providing physical support for claims.

Someone new to service, used to be a salesman?? What could possibly go wrong?? Oh, I'd say nothing could go wrong except for one thing, that you will be screwed.

Listen politely to the dealer, ask for written documentation and photos of all diagnostics and services proposed. Pass it all to NA Toyota and deal with them for resolution.

They do not or perhaps did not have a competent hybrid mechanic. A misfire in a hybrid presents differently than a normal gas car, primarily due to the electric transaxle (e-cvt) and the tight computer synchronization needed between the wheels, transaxle and engine.

It can sound like a broken rod but it is a designed slippage of a damper between the engine and transaxle. All of which is normally rock solid in a Toyota hybrid such that few run of the mill mechanics see faults. The plugs themselves can make 200k miles these days. If one of them failed it was a one off part defect.

You should drive it and determine its current state of repair. Carefully mark and watch coolant and oil levels over several weeks. The operation should be smooth, quiet and reliable. Toyota won’t do anything if the dealer says it is fixed.

You need to contact Don,Toyota of North America CEO.
Here is Don Direct line 972-324-7668

Call Toyota of North America and file a complaint, get a ticket #. Plus Email some one from Headquarters will Reach out to you. It is obvious something is wrong with your particular Rav4 and Toyota needs to make you Whole. Before doing Lemon law try the above,Toyota does not like negative publicity and I am sure they will work out something with you.

The dealers are not your friends and don’t care to help you have to reach out to Toyota.

When you call Don ask him if Toyota is willing to do an even exchange where you trade your car returning it to the Factory, you get a new 2024 and payments remain the same giving you credit.
I reached out directly to Toyota today and they bluntly stated they couldn’t do anything and to take the car to the dealer. Well I guess since the dealers do not respond and do not call back I will go sit in their lot and block incoming cars until they acknowledge these issues. Horrible company!

Hello all, newby.

My wife and I bought a 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid XLE premium last year.
I am enclosing a time line of issues.

05/02/2022 – Purchased

03/05/2023 – Rav 4 breaks down on interstate, warning lights, will not engage in drive. Towed to dealership

03/10/2023 – Picked up Rav 4 and was told it had required a new water pump at less than a year old and 18,000 miles. Cost of repair and rental was covered under warranty.

07/10/2023 – Warning lights again come on with advisement to “take to the dealership.” Car will not drive more than 45 mph, drive with hazards on interstate to dealership.

07/12/2023 – After no communication from dealer, presented at dealership to speak with the service manager about my vehicle. Told this time that “coolant had extruded into
electrical” as well as something wrong again with the water pump.

07/19/2023 – Picked up my car, told that it had required a water pump, engine harness, ECU and retest this time. Repairs and rental were covered under warranty.

08/14/2023 – While attempting to drive to work, check engine light comes on, alarms, message to take it again immediately to the dealership. Will not drive more than 45 mph and has a shaking vibration every time I push in the gas pedal. Arrive at Toyota dealership at 0745 am, told by technician that he is again unsure of when a diagnostic can be done.

08/16/2023 - As no communication from the service department, I call to find out an
update on my car. Told that it now needs a new fuel injector. It currently has 25,240 miles on it.

08/24/2023 – speak to a Toyota sales associate about option of trading in vehicle as it has been undriveable, unreliable, and has stranded me on the interstate. Offered $31,000 for a car i just bought a year ago and paid more for and told that I could buy one of their non hybrid 2023 Rav4 for $38,000 that was not AWD, not premium, no weather package, and no heated seats. Also of note, I currently have a 2.2% interest on my current loan and would have to give that up for today’s higher interest rate.

09/01/2023 – Attempt twice to contact service department for an update as they have
had my car for 2 weeks with no communication with us. No one answers the phone. Leave a message with the operator and with the customer service representative to please call us with an update.

09/02/2023 – We receive a phone call from the service department and are told the first "TASK" (apparently where the dealership talks with an engineer) was shown to replace the fuel injector. However, after replacing the fuel injector (at 25000miles), the car is still not running correctly and that a new “TASK" has to be generated to figure out next steps.

09/07/2023 – today, still driving rental vehicle, my Rav4 is still in the shop, now into 3 weeks, no communication from service shop on what is wrong and when it will be repaired.

So total, so far, is 5 weeks in the shop in under 15 months of ownership. Anybody out there ever hear of similar issues with the new Rav4 hybrids?
Responding late on this but I feel terrible that you had to go through all of this. My curiosity makes me wonder if this vehicle was in a flood. There are so many issues that could be electrical related.
