Hello fellow mates, hoping all is well with you and your families during this Covid-19 issue.

Will be doing my first Oil Change myself at 7200 km, it's been one year already since I got my 2019 Rav4.

Went to the dealer to buy the Oil Filter, the Oil 0-16 and the Gasket. They charged me 55.72 tx-in which I found expensive, (I'm cheap ... I guess).

QUESTION : The engine oil plug Gasket seems to be made of a hard plastic material. Is that the way it's made ??? My previous car used a gasket-washer-o-ring that was made of a very thin collapsible-crush copper material. Just want to use the right gasket (I guess I'm picky).

Thanks in advance for your replies and stay safe.

Pricey... I attached my invoice below I got at a local dealer if you wish to try your hand at a price match, save almost $20. As long as you haven't opened anything, say that you are returning the items unless they can honour it. I marked in red the RAV4 specific items (others are for my mom's corolla).

drain plug washer: PT90430-12031
That's the part number I have for the metal washer, included for free with filter (not shown on invoice). Go back and say they sold you the wrong one according to your vehicle. I'm sure it's fine, but plastic is plastic, also it's more expensive than a metal washer - that boi ain't right...

Yes and no, depends how you look at it. On the one hand they're hurting for business, and on the other, it's the usual formula MSRP + profit. Never pay full price and everything is negotiable especially if you have 15+ dealers within driving distance, the worst they can say is no. 🍻

I bought my filters from my dealer and they GAVE me a bunch of the gaskets for free. Woo hoo! By the way, the material that the Toyota part is made of looks like a bluish colored hard fiber gasket material with a layer of metal sandwiched in between. It's the same part for both my Toyota FJ Cruiser and my Rav4 too. It's not the aluminum style crush gasket that say Subaru uses and it works just fine, but don't reuse it. It does tend to stick to either the oil pan or the drain plug though. I wouldn't use something made of hard plastic. I had a Chevy Truck years ago that used that style and they invariably split, then leaked. I started using copper or aluminum ones for that reason.

If Canada is the same as USA, the dealer online parts is a different price than walking into the showroom (some will price match, some will not). My dealer online is currently showing $4.11 for the filter and I just do pick-up with thing I buy. It was $3.80 a few months ago and I loaded up on a 10 pack. All $USD. Yep, washer it's metal with blue coating.

Oil will be much cheaper from Walmart/Amazon or auto parts store and don't forget Pennzoil/Mobil 1 has rebates at time.

When it's cheap, stack it deep =).

Already got you filter cap/wrench? 64mm at 14 Flute if you did not already.
What are you all using? I got mine off ebay, metal one for $6.50, seems to fit perfectly and 1 oil change done.

I agree with the earlier observation. I ordered the OEM drain plug gaskets, and they appear to be metal with a polymer coating. They are not bare metal like those I’m accustomed to.

There are loads of online retailers selling OEM Toyota genuine parts at prices significantly lower than Stealerships' pricing. My go-to are 1/ Amazon 2/ McGeorge in Virginia 3/ Lakeland in Florida. P.S. My '98 RAV4 oil pan drain plug takes an aluminum crush washer coated w/ a blue composite material-- I buy them from Amazon in 10-packs. I buy OEM Toyota oil filters by the case on Amazon. I buy Mobil-1 100% synthetic oil by the case when it's on sale. Via this practice of buying these "three staples of the oil change" by the case, I always have on-hand what I need and don't have to jump through hoops or pay exorbitant prices (as you did) come oil-change time.

Very interesting. I did not notice a crush gasket on the Hybrid. I'll look much closer next time.

My Fusion has a built in rubber gasket. My previous Sonata had crush washers. Buying a couple one time the guy at the counter was incredulous over the price and just gave me a huge handfull" for the price of one". Lol.

The PT Cruiser had one of those, a built-in rubber gasket that was integral to the plug. It was a nice feature and made changing the oil a breeze, but after a couple of years, the rubber started to give out, so I replaced the drain plug just to be safe. In fact, the oil filter was also in a good spot and orientation to change as well. Too bad it was a royal PITA when you had to replace the cam belt. You had to lift up the engine and remove the engine mount just to replace the cam belt AND the water pump which is also driven by the cam belt.
