I have a 2017 toyota rav 4 and have had it for 3 years now and havnt had any issues with the breaks up until 3 weeks ago my breaks make that same whistle sound as soon as I start the car up the first 5 to 6 light breaks it does that then it goes away. Its rather annoying I get that moisture can sometimes be a factor which it has in the past.My mechanic told me the same thing it could be rust buildup or its due too the type of pads i have hes heard the same thing from certain people. If its rust how do you get rid of it?The breaks work fine same as always not noticing any difference in pressure too the floor or scraping as thats usually big indicators your pads and rotors need replacing.Just the whistling sound happens everytime i leave a parking lot for the first 5 or 6 light breaks then goes away

Light braking is using regeneration, so no use of the brake pads on the rotors except for the last few feet. If you try to do heavier braking for the first couple of stops that would clear any overnight rust.

Superunknown never mentions he has a hybrid. Only hybrids have regeneration.

Good point. I try to assume that if there is a post in the Hybrid forum boards, that the owner does have a hybrid. And yes, I do know what "assume" means.
But he has a 4th generation (2017) RAV4 and posted on the 5th generation hybrid area. Even though there was a hybrid RAV4 in 2017, it is hard to tell what his particular issue may be.

I've read about some common causes of noise:
1.Excessive wear of the brake disc causes noise.
2.It is easy to form an oxide layer on the surface of brake disks in a humid environment. The change of the contact surface between the brake disc and the brake pad causes abnormal noise.
3.Due to the corrosion or stagnation of the caliper, the guide pin is not lubricated enough and cannot return efficiently, resulting in incomplete contact between the brake pad and the brake disk.
4.During the running-in period, the brake pads and brake disks are not running in enough. After hundreds of kilometers, the noise will be automatically eliminated.
5.On muddy roads, dirt and stones adhere between the brake pads and brake disks. In this case, noise is prone to be caused.
6.Brake noise is caused by brake pad formula.

I’m at the dealership right now with my brand new 2024 RAV4 hybrid and the mechanics are saying the same thing I said I don’t wanna drive around with a brand new car with squeaking brakes. Every time somebody gets in my car they make a comment.

Make them install a shim kit and sand the surface of the pads. Try to work your brakes fairly hard once and awhile. It helps to keep the rotors smooth
