Hello, just wondering what kind of oil change intervals other RAV4 owners practice.

I have noticed that a fresh oil change on this little engine seems to perk it up quite a bit. Any thoughts?

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many posts have we had on this subject? Easily a thousand, maybe 10,000!
Now we'll see how many members want to waste time arguing about it AGAIN instead of just posting a number.

all 4 of my toyotas

every 10,000, change oil with mobil 1 of correct viscosity and toyota oil filter

oldest one 1999 4runner limited, burns almost zero oil (in 10,000 miles dipstick
moves from full mark to 2/3rd mark just darker)....makes more
power than it did when new rolling off the lot, over 280,000 miles...
so like 27 oil changes in 25 years

tacoma, yaris, and this rav4, same. every 10,000 miles with mobil 1

I don't overthink it or worry about it...my only stress is if I go over 10,000
miles I really start thinking about changing it and get it done asap.

no oil related, piston related, or lubrication issues, absolutely none**

**wait there is one oil related issue, the 4runner MAF sensor does need to be cleaned
from PVC vapor deposits every 50,000 miles or so, otherwise I may get rough idle on
humid cold days. the 4runner PVC route to the intake allows oily crankcase gasses to
settle on the MAF wires on engine shutdown and MAF doesn't have a 'bake off cycle' so I manually
need to spray clean it. super minor issue. throttle body also gets a spray when I do MAF

If a fresh oil change perks it up (more than likely a placebo effect), I would change it as often as you can. Daily if possible.

I follow Toyota's 5k mile recommendation.
Beg to differ. The factory recommended oil change, as shown in the maintenance owners manual is 10,000 miles or one year, which ever comes first. That is for normal operation. For severe service (trailer towing, mountain driving, car top carrier, etc) Toyota recommends 5,000 miles. Since I drive less than 10,000 miles in a year, I have my oil changed once a year, which is about 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

You're right!

If you review the Maintenance Manual (pg. 36 and 38), it shows what you're talking about. It does, however, say to change it every 5k if you don't use 0W-16, which I only use in the winter.

Toyota's official oil change interval is 10,000 miles.

Some of the people you pay to change your oil go online and tell you to pay them twice as often and change it 5,000 miles. Do whatever you want but realize that's more often than toyota recommends.

Recommended oil is 0w16. They do not want you to change non recommended oil every 5k, they want you to get back on track with 0w16 at next maintenance interval even if oil change isn't required. More frequent oil changes for non spec oil isn't the reason. They don't want owners to use non spec oil, period!

Me too. I only drive between 5k to 6k miles a year. The synthetic oil is not going to absorb too much water contamination from atmospheric moisture that it needs to be changed more frequently.

Recently traded in a 2011 2.7 liter Tacoma that had oil changed annually since new. Used in the eastern Canada rust belt and averaged about 10,000 km per year. Had oil analyzed a couple years in and all numbers within spec. Engine still in excellent condition when traded.
