I can not get Nav to show up on my HUD when using either Waze or Google maps. My Sales guy, who I brought the car back to, could not get it to work either. It only works when I use Toyota Nav which I never do. Anyone have any insight on how to get this to work?

Thanks.

The heads-up and dash display have a weird interaction with 3rd party Nav apps. For example, I can show the compass in my heads-up, but if I use CarPlay and Google maps my compass disappears from both the dash display (just blank) and from the heads-up. I have not spent enough time playing with it to figure out what is really going on.

It seems that the car compass somehow interacts with the Google Maps compass, or maybe Google is actually using the car compass and it no longer displays on the Toyota apps.

With Android Auto and Google Maps I get navigation on the dashboard, but not the HUD. It's too bad, since half the HUD space is wasted showing if it see lane lines, which is useless. I love the HUD, but I wish it showed useful info on the left side, such as if the brights are on (the high beam indicator is hard to discern on the dashboard), or more sign post info beyond speed limit. I don't use the built in nav because Google Maps is way better and I'm not going to pay when the year trial is up.

EDIT: typo

absolutely agree with all comments in fact not having a HUD has become a deal breaker for me when buying.

further, we happen to one of the few on this website that own both the prime and the 450h+. While out in the 450 my wife was driving and using her apple car play navigation. I asked her if the nav directions were coming up in her HUD. she said sure, always have been...fricken toyota.

I could have sworn that Apple Maps displays navigation (at least the next navigation prompt / turn) in my HUD. I will need to check again later.
I just checked in my 2025 RAV4 PHEV. Indeed, Apple Maps does show the next navigation prompt / turn on the HUD.

Clearly the CarPlay API has the ability to allow this. This gives me hope that it will someday come to Waze, which is on my screen nearly 100% of the time I'm driving. However, I am not holding my breath.

Regarding the highligted text above. Doe the lane lines go away if you disable Lane Assist? It does in my car. I like to see the compass in the HUD, and if LTA is on, it overwrites the compass.

I don't know, probably but it's not so much I don't like the lines exactly, which can be disabled via driving assistance setting in the HUD to get the compass. For me, that's not much better and then I lose having the cruise control set point in the HUD.

Next time when you’re using Google or Waze and you have the directions on your map press and hold your power button until you see the Toyota logo and let go. Now your car compass will work properly.

Using Apple Maps I have been getting turn by turn directions in the HUD and also in the instrument cluster, since ios17.

A trick to get the compass working properly when using Google maps or Waze is to get directions to wherever you’re going then press the power button of the radio until you see the Toyota logo and let go once everything restarts your Compass will work properly.

Is that a one time process, or do you need to do it on every drive?

Unfortunately, every time you start a new trip. I haven’t tried ending one trip and starting another one without restarting my vehicle or the radio.
