We bought a RAV4 Hybrid XLE last week. The dealer sold us on a 10 year/125K extended warranty for $3995, which we can cancel if we change our minds.

I see previous posts of people getting 10 years for around $1800.

Do these warranty costs vary by dealer, or was this just prices going up over time? Is it worth canceling and finding one from somewhere else?

First you want a Toyota vehicle service agreement not a third party agreement. They come in several versions with the longest term being 125K miles or 10 years. The most comprehensive is a Platinum with 0 deductible. That is what I got since I keep cars long term. The warranty is also transferable one time.

Any Toyota dealer can sell you one up to 3 years or 36K miles of the cars ownership. You should cancel and find one for about $1800. Someone her will provide names or try DM @JuneBug

I just bought a 2024 XLE Hybrid. I turned down all of the extended warranties. As a former Honda Guy here, I am hoping that Toyota is just as reliable and hoping for the best I kept my CRV for 15 years with no issues other than Changing out an AC compressor and starter as the only issues.. I always rationalize those warranties with how many things could go wrong with this vehicle over time? This is the 5th generation so they have had some time to get this vehicle better over the past few years.

We paid 1.6k for a 10yr/125mi/0 deductible Platinum for our 2023 Limited. You don't have to buy it from the dealership who sold you the car, you can price check other Toyota dealerships. Search the forum for Jerry Johnson.

Prices fluctuate on these, but 4k is an utter ripoff.

Read the fine print if you cancel though, I could be wrong but I think once you cancel the Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty your vehicle is no longer able to re-enroll.

I cancelled mine after buying my 2024 because I later found out that the dealer had ripped me off. During the process I spoke with Toyota Financial, and they told me that I can repurchase at any time from whomever after canceling. I haven't tried to get another plan yet, though, so I can't 100% confirm.

This is good information to know! 🍻

If you always want to be in warranty, consider one-pay leases when there are specials, or at least invest that $4,000 (plus tax) and use it to trade-in at the 5 year drivetrain warranty point. I think CAREFULLY buying service contracts makes more sense as hourly rates will always increase. Toyota's are supposed to have the lowest cost extended warranties as you are not likely to use it... which goes both ways. As others said, get several quotes and read the fine print on all of them. But, who has time (or any interest) for that?! LOL Good luck!

Consumer Reports magazine recommends against extended warrantees.

There have been some significant changes over the past few years with parts longevity, parts costs, labor, and shipping rates. For most of my large, long term purchases now, I consider a manufacture (not 3rd party) warranty extension.

The golden years of owning a Toyota long term or perhaps most other well known brands and only doing regular Maintenace may be over. Still Toyota is overall better than other brands but they do have their issues and design flaws.

One coolant sensor, head unit, rear liftgate, or something else and I am near break even point, give or take. Two repairs and I am ahead.

I do not have a place to do my own major work or specialized tools, if I did I may have forgone the warranty.

With most nicely equipped Toyota's costing $35-50K now, $1800 insurance over 7 years/89K miles (after 3/36 is over) is not a bad deal to me. Also, the Platinum warranty fills in the gaps of the 6/60 powertrain warranty and has some car rental provisions & roadside assistance. It also is transferable if one decides to sell, which would be a great selling point for a private sale.

I have owned 3 Toyotas over the past 30 years and never purchased an extended warranty but these were on base cars costing between $10-20K.

After getting burned with the 2.4 liter oil burner in a mid 2000s Toyota, and reading about the issues with the Gen 5 here, coupled with the overall cheapness/light weigh of today's parts/designs, I opted for the extended warranty. We will see if it was worth it over the remaining five years or 83K miles of the warranty for me. JMO

Who did you buy it from? I was told at the dealership that I had to buy at the time of the car purchase or it wouldn't be an option later.
That is usual dealer sales blather. You can buy it any day until the warranty you get with the new car purchase runs out.

Be aware that it is not a warranty and doesn't cover everything the new car warranty covers. So read the contract carefully. There are places that will sell the same prepaid maintenance agreement (and that is what it really is) at a significant discount. Ask me via PM (click on my screen name, leave me a message) and I'll share.

The dealer sold version is a profit maker for lots of people, just not most owners.

Thanks for your reply, Mike. I clicked on your name but then can't see a place to leave you a PM. I'm new to this site so still trying to figure it out.
I just purchased a 2021 Rav4 LE hybrid so the original warranty is over. Might this make a difference?

I PM'ed you. Look at the top right corner of the screen and see if there isn't an indicator there. Click on it. It says you have a message.

For a new Toyota, one has up to 3 years/36000 miles to purchase a Toyota VSA (they only one worth getting) from any Toyota dealer. For used, according to AI

"
A Toyota Vehicle Service Agreement (VSA) for a used Toyota is an extended warranty that can cover repairs and replacements. You can purchase a VSA for a used Toyota at the time of purchase from a participating Toyota dealership.

Eligibility

  • The vehicle must be a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV)
  • The vehicle must be within 6 model years old and have up to 85,000 miles
  • The vehicle must have a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Limited Powertrain Warranty"

So you dealer may have been correct that it needed to be purchased at time of purchase BUT you may have been able to purchase from ANY dealer, not sure. Perhaps call one of the dealers that @mikefocke provided and see what they say.

For my 2024 Hybrid Rav4 XLE Premium I only paid 2,000 for a 100,000 mile or 10 yr whichever comes first. It covers bumper to bumper including all mechanics and computers. It's worth it these newer ones has like 28 or 30 computers i was told with the technology and if 1 computer breaks it's very costly. i was given 500 off when i negotiated. You can ask for a lower price, cause the finance manager starts high on the price for those extended warranty.

It all depends on the extended warranty company
Allstate does a lot of small stuff these days on Amazon
The BIG thing is if the underwriters are going to still be there in 10 years
Extended warranty is just insurance
So read the fine print as there is no free lunch

Oh yea check to see if the dealer is the administrator for the extended warranty as well
They may have a bean counter in another country making decisions on your coverage or warranty claims

Extended warranty’s are a suckers bet at the craps table of life…..
But if you are a hard luck Charlie that everything goes bad
It might be smart money if you get the right company

Oh yea the sales guys make BIG bank on insurance or any 3rd party upgrades like fabric protection and paint guards etc.

In my area the numbers can be 50%!
And they may do a cut rate job on coatings etc.

Back to the extended warranty
Even bait and switch they start with a premium company and premium coverage
But change it when you bargain hunt the price

Buyer beware unless it is Toyota direct
