I've tried to read through the forum for the proper thread, but I can't find it.

My wireless Apple Car Play on my 2024 Hybrid SE RAV4 will disconnect when I'm on the phone with someone. This has happened multiple times, and I can't find a fix.

Is anyone else having this issue?
1. Does it reconnect when you finish your phone call?

2. I could be wrong, but the later 5th generation RAV4 use Bluetooth for the CarPlay connection. (And the hands free connection , i.e. phone calls are always Bluetooth). Most phones can only have one Bluetooth connection active at the same time, thus one of them must be dropped.

Those of us that have the wired CarPlay and use a wired to wireless adapter, those adapters generally use Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth.

Every once in a while, I'll get a notice that Wi-Fi is unavailable and it won't connect at all.
The phone connection goes off and on during one call. It's pretty frustrating.
I hope that makes sense.

I have a similar problem: We drive using Google maps, rather than Toyota's built in nav system (there are just too many errors in Toyota's system). We connect to our phones using Apple's car play. Often when driving, the car will disconnect from the phone. We haven't driven it enough to be sure about a pattern, but it MIGHT be connected to when something else goes on with the phone, such as receiving a text or stopping or starting an audio book we are listening to.

The phone and the car disconnect, and we have to wade through the menus to reconnect. The wading through menus is a bit of a hassle, but the larger issue is that when it disconnects, it also cancels and clears the current directions we have called up on the phone. The real problem comes when driving in remote areas where there is no cell phone signal (which we do often). The map in the phone will not reload until we once again have a cell phone signal. This can be many miles down the road in some of the more remote locations. (yeah, I know we can download maps ahead of time into our phone for offline use, but we don't always do that.)

Has anyone figured out how to prevent the disconnect from happening, or at least prevent a disconnect from clearing the map out of the phone? It does not happen in any of our other connected vehicles, nor does it happen if we are using our phone as a standalone navigation device. So we are fairly sure this is a Toyota issue.

Apple Maps can be downloaded and saved to your phone Also believe the same can be done with Google maps. Also are you using Apple CarPlay connected wired or wireless.if wireless suggest getting a good USB-A to Lighting cable for the trips.

Yes, Google Maps will let you download maps - as I mentioned in my earlier comment. The fun part is finding out that I did not do that while in the middle of nowhere, miles from any cell signal.

However, if I start a route while in cell service and run Google maps without connecting to the Rav4, the phone will keep that route for as long as I keep the app running: it saves the route currently in memory even if cell phone signal is lost. It operates similarly when using Google Maps on our phone and connecting via Apple Car Play in our Chevy Bolt. (The Bolt never causes a disconnect from the phone, but if we shut the Bolt off, the phone still retains the currently loaded route even when there is no cell phone signal.)

The problem is that when the Rav 4 has problems, not only does it disconnect from the phone, it causes the phone to unload the route, losing all guidance until we are back in cell signal. I know that saving a map for offline use will let us reload the map with no cell service. I'd still like to not have the RAV4 clear the active route from the phone. It's a hassle & distraction to reload a route while driving.

Our problems with Apple Car Play in our 2024 Rav4 Prime continue. When using either Google Maps or listening to a book on tape on either of two iPhone XR phones (both in good working order with plenty of free memory, and work flawlessly with our Chevy Bolt) the Carplay map disconnects and the carplay logo choice disappears from the screen. Sometimes it will reappear a few minutes later, but sometimes we have to go through reconnecting the phone to the vehicle. When playing a book on tape (which has been downloaded to the phone, NOT streaming from the internet), the playback will frequently experience drops and sometimes disconnect entirely.

I thought this might be a WiFi issue, but my wife just tried it with a known good lightning cable plugged in to the USB outlet above the wireless charger and she's experiencing the same thing.

We're going to take it in to the dealer, but since it's not a constant thing, we're wondering if they will be able to duplicate the problem. Has anyone had this problem and been successful in getting it fixed? If so, what was the issue?

The iPhone XR wa released in 2018 and will be supported by Apple;e until this year 2025. Have you tried to update the phone to the latest iOS that it supports. The iPhone XR is also listed as the iPhone 9. This is because the next year the iPhone 10 was introduced. Have you updated your phones to the latest iOS? The iPhone XR is able to be updated to iOS 18. My iPhone will pause briefly while playing music even when it is sitting in the cubby right by the wireless connector. Wife and I figured out that it is listening for the Siri and it hears something similar when we are talking and it pauses.

Both phones are running the latest iOS. We ran into the same problem with our daughter's iPhone 14 pro. Apparently, it's a known problem with a wide range of phones

Same here... Phone is up to date and I took it to the dealer they can't replicate it. I was driving a Corolla from the dealer and had no problem with Car Play... just with my RAV 4.

"
The bug is not specific to any one brand or model of car, so we can rule out an issue at that level. Autoevolution, which broke the story, says it’s aware of the problem affecting “the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid, the 2025 Mazda CX-30, 2024 Hondas, multiple Volkswagen models, the 2023 Audi S3, and the 2023 Nissan Frontier,” and I also spotted the Ford Territory and Fiesta, the 2020 Subaru Forester, and an unspecified Jeep in the thread.

This is an embarrassing development for Apple, after iOS 18.4 was also reported to have caused issues with lossless audio on the AirPods Max (although that’s since been fixed) and unwanted apps to appear unexpectedly on users’ iPhones. To some extent such bugs are understandable because 18.4 is a major update with numerous tweaks and new features: before these bugs began to appear we optimistically listed 15 reasons to install it right away."

Yet another iOS 18.4 bug breaks CarPlay this time

I have had a problem that it just pauses whenever there is noise or someone speaks in the car. It is like SIRI pauses waiting for a command then resumes playing music. We just hope Apple get a fix out for these bugs.

I just updated both mine and my woes Carlinkit 5.0 to the latest software. Since then I have had no pause and the sound even seems better.
Here are the instructions to update, It took just a few minutes.

Carlinkit 5.0 Update

1. Search for the box WiFi (AutoKit_**) on your mobile phone and enter the password 12345678

2. After successful connection, visit 192.168.50.2 in your own browser on the iPhone to enter the background It then updates.

3. Click Help - Online Upgrade/Rollback

I hope this fixes the disconnect/pause feature for those still using 18.4 I am using 18.5 Beta and t seems much smoother I had also updated my Carlinkit 5.0 to the latest update and between them I have not had a disconnect or a pause in the music using CarPlay. Also after the update the sound seems to be better Where I use to have volume set around 20 it is now set around 13 for the same sound.
iOS 18.4.1 now available with CarPlay fix and more - 9to5Mac

Do you have to have the Rav4's phone subscription (I think it was AT&T?) in order to update Carlink 5.0?

I let mine run out as soon as the trial period ended, and have no interest in starting it up again.

No. Carlink and WiFi are two different things. To update the radio firmware, go to the Toyota software update web site.

I understand that CarPlay and WiFi are two different things. However, WiFi is a local network connection, not an internet connection. What I'm asking about is more related to the vehicle's connection to the cellular network (which provides access to the internet), which I am not paying for. Without that, how do you get the data from Toyota's site into the vehicle?
