The issue here is that the DCM communication is paid for by Toyota. They have a contract with ATT. The primary use of the DCM is for communication about the car status that is used by the app. The in-car wifi is essentially an add-on to the DCM. If you want to use a different carrier for wifi, you could get a hotspot device from the carrier of your choice or use the hotspot on your phone.

OK, I am going to file a class action Lawsuit against Toyota.
"My lawyer will make money. Your lawyer will make money. You will loose". (From the movie "True Grit" staring John Wayne).

My objection is I have to PAY ATT to access MY car! I could easily add my own Esim to MY car and give toyota access to the car!
The only thing you would pay ATT for is to have Internet access via Wifi in the car. This allows people traveling in the car to essentially have a hotspot to access the Internet. Many phone plans will also give you a hotspot, so it is really not required.

There is no ability to access the car data external to the car except through the Toyota app. This does not require paying ATT for the hotspot. You would just have to pay Toyota once the free trial is over.

yeah... was trying to understand the ire of the OP "paying ATT".... was he getting a bill???

he did not mention using a hot spot, perhaps he can explain how he is indeed paying ATT?

Well, Two law firms eventually turned bowed out of lawsuits because they have Toyota as a distant client. I still ruse to pay AT&T for a connection to MY RAV, so I do not get to use remote start, remote lock, remote anything, and that sucks. Of course I use Google Car play when In the car, and could easily add my Google Fi Esim to my RAV. I am now looking into a hacker that can get into the DCM and replace the damn Esim that AT&T has. I will let you all know if this can be done and how, when done. I am still waiting to hear back from two more Law firms about a class action suit. It is simply wrong to make a toyota owner pay $15 a month for access to MY damn RAV!

You must be the only person in the world paying ATT $15 a month.

Can you prove this by scanning a bill from ATT?

You have avoided this question... If you were more relaxed, perhaps amending your statement "I don't want to pay Toyota for the service, and I'm sure part of that money goes to AT&T".... then you would be off the hook and correct in what you are saying... until then, you will get people calling your out to prove your statement.

It's probably a simple matter of being more correct in your complaint... which is almost justifiable, but Toyota would then have to support multiple networks, and have even more support problems, so your argument is just wrong... It would cost you MORE overall if you were able to unbundle the costs and pay the cellular data people yourself.

If you don't "get it" then you are indeed naive in how the world works.
