I do not care what kind of a compressor that is. However, it is shaking the whole car pretty bad. It is like a bad massager built in.

Ya, the other cars using it are mostly high end - BMW, Merc and Audi (VW Passat excepted)

Re: COOL KOMPRESSOR

and higher compression pistons too:)

Flying will look at for a bit and soon he will be telling us he has installed a high lift cam (swash plate) and turned his RAV4 into a Good Humor truck with all the cool!

Re: hm

the shaking is not the compressor. its common with a 4 cylinder as the rpm drops slightly when the compressor labors. Generally the more cylinders, the more smooth an engine is..

That 2002 copyright is also on the news release link for April 2005 that I posted earlier yesterday along with the info link on the compressor. The new compressor wasn't supposed to be manufactured until April this year, so unless they moved production up, it's not the same compressor in Rav4's made before April '06.

I found this on the web. However the only Toyota listed using it is the Yaris.
That page is copyrighted 2002. Most likely the same as used in the 2006+ RAV4. 8)
2002 that's strange the Yaris just came out!

the yaris has been overseas for a while....its one of toyotas best selling cars overseas for the past few years....

I have this compressor on my dec 05 made rav...

I wonder how you turn this compressor (A/C) off? Is it just a matter of adjusting the piston stroke to zero, in which case it is always turning.

Mine's 04/06 so I guess it has it too. It's very hard to see the compressor at least on the V6! I was hoping I could find the model number to match it to the link you gave.

That's my guess - it probably never goes to full zero compression, just to a minimal amount.

Helicopters use swash plates to control the rotor blade pitch - swash plates allow longitudinal motion through a rotating joint or attach point.

The compressor is very nifty. I wonder how it will hold up over a decade of use?

Actually I disagree. You feel that something is working and, depending on engine temp, the fans start to run full blast causing some minor vibration. Furthermore our modern RAV's, regardless if I4 or V6, will adjust the idle RPM a tad higher to compensate though I think that almost 250 RPM for the V6 is too much!

There's got to be a problem. I've had a number of 4 cyl cars with A/C (including Camrys and VWs) and any increase in idle roughness was pretty minor. Could be a problem with the compressor  or the idle stabilization controls. I suspect the latter is controlled by the ECM in the RAV4 so it definately is a item for the DEALER to look at.

In the old days it was a valve that bypassed air around the throttle valve when the A/C came on ... or a carb "kicker" that mechanically opened the throttle slightly. The former was a better solution because it also worked off-idle.

Re: hm

all FI cars use this to adjust the idle. Its called an AIC (air idle control) valve. Its basically a stepper motor attached to a pintel which opens and closes to allow air around the closed throttle body plate to adjust the idle.

Like I said, I would not care if this vibration stayed isolated. This issue stood out with my camry right away and there is another topic on this issue, so I am not alone.

It is not pleasant to feel the vibration through my body, especially after a long day of work, when you want comfort. It operates fine at hihway speeds, but in stop and go traffic, it is pretty notice-able.

My point is, why couldn't they dumpen this vibration better? The AC is fine also, if the car is in Park. But the extra load through the tranny - just cannot handle it well.

Plus my AC is performing weak and the dealer says: all is fine.

I get this slight shake too when in gear with the ac pumping. Like I have said. Every 4 cylinder automatic ac equipped car that I have owned in the 30 years all have done this. I believe its part of the inherent 4 cylinder unsmoothness.. I think its pretty normal.

Oh and my ac is much better now that I aded a few oz of 134.. :)

yes you are right. But mine was not filled from the factory. The same thing happened to two of my other cars in the last 5 years.. a few oz short of a full fill. Made a nice difference..

??? Why did you add 134??? At your 06 RAV4???
Aren't these systems designed to be sealed and shouldn't it take YEARS prior servicing and recharging them the first time?
