I'm thinking of buying a car & am looking at cars that aren't too expensive & get very good gas mileage which have cargobeds in which you could hang stuff out the back window if needed (like a stationwagon).

I hate it when the rear windows can't open separately from the rear door because then if you want to haul something big out the back, you have to keep the actual door open & rope it down so it doesn't bang against the object with every bump in the road.

I've ruled out the ScionXA, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, & Nissan Versa because the rear window doesn't open.
:?:
1) Does anyone know about the Toyota RAV4 rear window ??
:?:
Thanks,

The back glass on the 3rd generation Rav4 does'nt open... I'm trying to think of models on which it does, and the only thing that comes to mind is the previous generation Santa Fe...

Thanks!

By "previous generation", do you mean that *current* Sante Fe's do not have this feature (& only old models have it) ?

Hmmm. I just did a google search for "rear window that opens" and "suv" and found that the Ford Escape & Mazda Tribute have that feature. However, the Tribute is expensive....

edited to say I just looked at the Escape price...that's expensive too!

Thanks ...I'm going to check out the Matrix & Vibe !!

I did some searching & found another inexpensive car (like the Tucson)....the Kia Sportage has a rear window that opens separately.

The new Santa Fe doesn't have the opening rear window anymore, but the Hyundai Tucson (Hyundai's smaller SUV) does. On the car side, the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe has the opening rear window as well.

This is the last year for the Matrix and Vibe.
Tell the salesman and try to get a bigger discount because it's the last year.
Tell him that will hurt resale value.

The 4runner has a powered rear window, now why cant we get that on the RAV?
Seems component wise the rav is very minimalist. We don't even get a trip computer. Well we have one (the OBDII ECU) but we have no display to see the info with.

If you look under the rav its also minimalist. Components are un protected (canister even) Even things that need reinforcement are barely welded. Sound deadening is near zero in the underbody. They did everything to keep cost and weight down.

We are just not worthy enough to get a power rear window. Not even worthy enough to have an opening rear window.

Something does not compute here. The xA is tiny. I can load longer things into my RAV4.3 which I could into xA if its rear window opened.

I was unhappy that the RAV4.3 does not have the rear window opened, but over the year I had it I did not have a situation when someting would not fit inside (that would if window were openable -- e.g. not counting mattresses). And believe me, I visited Home Depot and IKEA quite a few times. This ute is huge, compared to Fit, Yaris, etc. So over time I sort of stopped caring about the rear window.

What I really would like now, is the front passenger seat folding. Apparently, it does not fold because of airbags shooting out of it. But shouldn't it be easy to add a switch which tells computer when it's folded? The seat already has weight sensors for 2-stage airbags.

This could change things.....notice post 10 and 11 http://RAV4World.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9935&highlight=2x8
Yeap, as a matter of fact, both front seats will fold down completely flat to meet the folded rear seat height if you remove the head rests. Other than the need to sleep in your RAV, I don't see the need of the driver side laying completely flat, but it does.

Did it break down a lot?

I say that because I own a 98 Sportage that my teenage son drives. Trust me, if your planning on keeping it over 5 years, get an extended warranty.
