Hey there...

Looking into buying a 97 4D 2WD automatic RAV4 ($5700), but my only hesitation is the mileage = 130K miles. Just wondering if anyone has any idea about how many miles I can expect to get out of a RAV4 -- a '97, specifically.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated! Any other random buyer tips too! (Ask about timing belt/water pump, etc.)

Thanks!

life of a 97

so much depends on past maintainace, find out all you can!!! I bought one just like that with 130000 for $4800 and think I got a real good deal.
all work had been done on time and it drives like a new one, uses half a quart between oil changes.
I see no reason why I will not get 250000 out of it

good luck

I've torchered mine for 71,000+miles and it is still singing as a cat. Proper maintenance is key. Don't expect a dog will love you after years of neglect. It will get back to you when you least expect it and need it the most.

If you buy a used RAV4 from a dealer or a stranger. Their are key places you can look for maintenance. If these places show neglect, walk away from it. Or, use the Used car inspection list. It was in Spanish and I translate it the best I could.

Used Car Inspection Checklist
Exterior

_____Look for unmatched paint or poor body fit (may indicate collision damage).

_____Check for body filler (use a refrigerator magnet on suspicious spots, unless body panel is not made of metal to begin with).

_____Look for rust all around, especially at wheelwells, under doors, in trunk.

_____Musty smell or dampness in trunk may indicate collision damage.

_____If car appears newly painted, why?

Tires

_____Wear should be even on each tire and among the set.

_____Tires must be same size.

_____Wear should be consistent with odometer mileage.

_____Insist on a spare, jack, and lug wrench.

Suspension

_____Push down and release each corner of car. If it bounces more than once, car may need struts or shocks.

_____Push and pull on each wheel from beside the car. If wheel moves in or out, bearings or CV joints may be in bad condition.

_____Remember that uneven tire wear may indicate suspension problems. If car has new tires, be extra careful in checking suspension.

_____Check for "dog-tracking" by having a friend follow you while driving the car. If rear end of car seems to be sliding to the side, car may have serious frame damage from a collision.

_____If front-wheel drive, check CV joint boots on either end of front axles (should be a total of four). If torn or missing, expect to have trouble with expensive joints!
Interior

_____Wear of seats, steering wheel, etc. should be consistent with odometer mileage.

_____Pay special attention to amount of wear on pedals.

_____Musty smell or new carpet may indicate flood damage.

_____Make sure windows, safety belts, etc. all work.

_____Check glove box contents. You should have an owner's manual. Look for repair orders which may show the car's mileage.

Make sure mileage makes sense with current odometer reading.
Under the Hood

_____Check for proper fluid levels.

_____Oil should not smell burnt or contain water.

_____Coolant (antifreeze) should be green, not rusty. (Note that Texaco now makes an coolant that is orange.)

_____Automatic transmission fluid should be red or pink and not smell burnt.

_____Look for leaks around radiator and hoses.

_____Spots on ground under the car may indicate leaks. To be sure, place a clean newspaper on ground under the car after driving it. Check in a few minutes for spots.

The Final Steps

_____Inspected by mechanic. If car passed your inspection, take it to an independent mechanic for a more complete inspection.

After 130K I would assume that the various parts in the engine have worn and polished themselves to the correct operating clearances. And the compression seal should now be optimized, thus minimizing pressure loss in the cylinders. Congratulations.

And run a carfax on it for additional history. Carfax.com
Worth every penny.

Two other quick questions:

Firstly, re: Carfax reports, I understand that not having anything bad listed on a Carfax report is a good thing, but it doesn't necessarily guarentee that nothing major has happened to the car, right? In other words, is it possible that there actually was some type of major issue with the car (engine replacement, etc.) that simply occured under the radar of Carfax?

Secondly, if the Rav seller isn't sure if the timing belt and water pump have been replaced, is there any way to tell by simply looking under the hood?

Thanks, this forum has been a huuuge help!

Sometimes engines are dusty, if you see that in the area of the water pump bolts are kind of scraped or shiny. This is cause by the wrench when it was being used. This area won't have any dust compared with the rest of the engine. Look for new gaskets. New clean parts while others are dusty. Makings on the pump itself like red or black part numbers on it. Sometimes new hoses are a give away that something was done. Timing belt is a little difficult because (on the 3SFE engine) it has a cover over it.

Ha, Ha, Ha, Brilliant ... I just laughed myself into another drink ... got any more??

I'll just let you know that my car just turned 198,000 miles and still running strong, no major work done to it, just strict maintenance. If the car is in good condition It'll last a long time.

My '97 AWD 4 Door just surpassed the 130k mark recently.
This is not high usage in my opinion (~14k/yr).

My car does have minor issues here and there. But I don't think it's anything that a decent tune up couldn't fix.

Never had any real operational issues and the car runs mighty strong in Seattle even when other cars are stuck in ditches during the winter seasons (okay fine... it doesn't snow that much here).

The only time it stalled on me was when I completely ran out of gas lol.

Yeah, more or less. Give or take a MM or 2.
Procky /M, I just had my third Gatorade on this one. (I don't drink)

I did read this one until now.

I bought my 97 RAV4 in 2002 for $5500 with 140000 miles on it. It was only one owner previous who actually sold it to me and she had all the records and receipts for maintenance performed the years she had it. She also sold it to me with the tires in great shape...almost new. I was also thinking about the mileage when I bought my RAV. I got a great deal and am still satisfied. I still have the RAV and now it's at 205000 and still runs great. The only thing is that I need my shocks and struts done and the EGR valve fixed also and those problems are fixable.

2 people mentioned shot EGR valves. Mine is a 96 with @94k. I just had the timing belt/water pump and other belts changed. How do you know the EGR is shot? Thanks. 8)

I'm absolutely amazed at some of the comments on here. It seems that you people really DO love your Rav's.

I bough my present (first) Rav, about nine (9) months ago. A 1998 GX 2.0l 3dr. I paid 2500 UK pounds, and its in great condition, (2 owners). I got all the service history, receipts, all M.O.T's etc. I have been 'motoring' for about Fifty (yes 50) years, and I can honestly say this is probably the best car I have ever had. :D And I've had lots! (UK pensions don't run to new cars).

What surprises me the most is the incredible mileages some of you have on your cars. Mine is 107,000.

I would be interested to hear who has the greatest current mileage. At the moment Lucidity2007 has it at 205,000 ..... WOW! Can anybody beat that .. :?:

I had never heard bout the EGR going out. Probably you can tell from a check engine light (insufficient EGR flow). Again, i've never had problems as far as that goes. (Currently at 198,700 miles)
