Well, if it runs bad enough to have misfires and poor idle, something is very wrong and sould be easy to find.
You might need to scan it while its running bad to find out what sensor connection is intermittant.
Fuel pumps, filters, do NOT go intermittant, they plug up or crap out.

Ignition stuff can cause problems when its moist.
The coolant temp sensor, and other sensors can cause problems on and off, as things heat soak.

I have to disagree with you Brett

I had a fuel pump intermittently fail on my 86 supra. The car started 19 times out of 20 tries (hot or cold it didn't matter). once started ran fine, accerated great. It took a long time to diagnose it down to the pump (I even gave the tank a good couple kicks when it didn't start it was more out of frustration but it didn't help)

Fuel pumps can also get weak over time, those are also a real joy to diagnose...

Yes, it is rare but I have come across a few over the years.

@kikemt.. any luck with our problem?

by the way, i was able to finally change my fuel filter, and yes, acceleration greatly improved! whew! that's one less problem there. but then again, there's still misfire/pinging.. a very small one at that.

you guys think i should change plug wires now? or have the valves check and adjust?

thanks!

I have an issue with my 99 RAV4 with 133K miles on it. It first have rough idle - the RPM would go up and down at the stop of traffic light, sometimes it would not accelerate when I push gas padel down after the traffic light turned green. I went thru the sticky note here to clean the Intake Air Throttle area, use heavy duty paper towel to clean out the black sticky oily mud around on the inside surface, but did not take apart the lower metal piece with engine coolant going thru it, because the engine coolant started flowing out when I upplug the big rubber pipe from the bottom.
the rough idle went away for 3 days, and there was no acceleration problem after traffic light. But yesterday there was one re-occurance of "no acceleration" - I push the gas padel down, the car keep running slowly at about 1200 RPM, no acceleration, it runs like that for about 1 minute, then the RPM started going up fast, car get acceleration and returned normal. what could this problem be? This "no acceleration" only happened after starting from a stopped position, it never slowed me down from cruise speed (>30MPH) driving. thanks,
