It's the whole exterior styling of the CR-V that bothers me. The grill, the c pillar, rear taillights, and lift gate. Honda is a great company, with very reliable products, but they have weirdo styling.
+1

Also, although it isn't technically standard equipment, it's rare to find a RAV4 that doesn't have the roof rack. It's equally rare to find a CR-V that does have one.
+1 , and it's also equally rare to find a CR-V with stock fog lights.
When I was looking at the '09 CR-V I was surprised to find out that fog lights were only available as a dealer installed option.

I can't remember the exact price, but it's one expensive option too!

Edited: Just checked. Might be cheaper in the states, but its $605.33+ tax here in Canada!!

Honestly you can't really go wrong with either vehicle. Both are great and styling... well that's a matter of opinion. If you are considering either car, I'm sure you considered all the tech specs and just want some other opinions from actual owners.

Things I would consider are:
1) Utility. How much stuff are you going to carry and what type of cargo do you need to haul. For a grocery getter, either car will do but a lifting rear gate and a rear window that opens is a definitely plus on my part so I would give it to the CRV in that case. HOWEVER if you need to haul larger stuff around and tow, the Rav4 would definitely be the choice to make. Larger interior and the V6 hauls 3500lbs. I'm sure there's not too much between the V6 and the i4 so you should feel comfortable pulling 1500lbs i4 limit in the Rav4 than you would in the CRV.
2) Location of where you live. Do you live in a city with small parking spaces? If so, every millimeter counts and the CRV wins here. However if you live in the rural country side where it's harder to get car service, you would be comforted with either the Sports appearance with run flats or the full sized spare (tire pressure kept in check with TPMS... yes even the spare) on the Rav4.

I have to agree with SeriousBlack and Aribus, the Cr-V is quite ugly, especially the back!
...
Not just ugly, but fugly. It looks like it is trying to pass as a sedan with the curve of the rear windows. When we were shopping, we never even test drove the CRV, even though we greatly appreciate Honda qualty and reliability.

The CR-V obviously looks good enough for the OP to consider it so subjective opinions about styling is out of the equation. I actually drive an 06 (Gen 2.5) CRV now and am looking to get into a Rav soon. I am making the switch for reasons that do not apply to your equation (my wife does't drive a stick and we want something that she can drive on rainy/snowy days that will handle better than her Accord) All the same, going from one to the other, I can say

Interior fit & finish: CRV
Interior Space: Rav4
AWD: Rav4 (locking)
Rear Gate: Crv lift gate
Spare I: Rav w/ Full Size
Spare II: CRV w/ donut over RFT(s)
Exterior Look I: Overall Rav4 (my opinion)
Exterior Look II: Crv lift gate over Rav (Appearance Package)
Power: Rav (but probably not enough to make your decision for you)
Opinion I: You live in NY so a better 4WD system would be beneficial
* Note: we just got about 10" in St. Louis this past weekend and my CRV did awesome plowing through everything (and I go looking for places to drive around in it) )to put things in perspective
Opinion II: Living in NY the CRV lift gate would probably be a better option if you do a lot of street parking and need to get things from the back
Summary: You can't go wrong with either vehicle. It really comes down to how you weigh the importance of each factor, and which one you like best. I would drive and parallel park each to see which offers better functionality for your life. On test drives, I like to go to my house and then make my commute to work to make an equal comparison for handling and feel.
Good Luck

You've obviously missed the point I was trying to make.
Which is, the OP likes the look of the competition enough to consider it, so your (personal) attraction to the vehicle is not relevant in my opinion. Additionally, I would expect people on a Rav4 site would have more to say about the positives of the Rav than they do about their (negative) opinion of the competition.
I'm not saying I disagree, I think the new CRVs are ugly, but I wouldn't expect that opinion to be helpful to the car buyer, so I kept it to myself

I'll never forget the day I drove my 125HP 11 year old CRV into the Toyota dealership to test drive the V6 RAV. The Honda had served us well, but man, the first time I took the RAV on the highway, I knew I was in love. That is one sweet engine! The lockable 4WD is another great feature, the dowhill assent control, and the hill assist feature are also nice. We will soon have the RAV 3 years, not one recall, not one problem as of yet. The only thing I would want is the defeat traction control button that the newer RAV has. I wish someone would come out with a do it yourself switch. Buy the RAV...It's a great vehicle.
