Fuel Pump Whining ... But Car Vin Past TSB EG002-07 Date?????

Hey gang,
I have read all the postings with regards to the whining fuel pump noise. I checked out TSB EG002-07 and my Vin is later than the cutoff date indicated. Could it still be the fuel pump resistor? I have the classic symptoms ... appears at idle and low speeds from the passenger rear. What is real interesting is that it only happens when the tank is at least half full. Less than that and the whine isn't there. (Car is an '07 Sport V6 with 31k miles ... whine just started in the past month)

I'd run it by your dealer. Toyota has been extra responsive and lenient lately for some reason.

One other thing to mention is that the car blew a P0606 the other day. Lights are out on the dash now but it is still in the memory list. I wonder if the two events could be related. (I am thinking the ECM is going, hence the cause of my P0606 error code)

A quick correction to the original problem statement. I heard the humming briefly this morning on an 1/8th of a tank of gas. Seems like gas volume doesn't have anything to do with it (as I thought originally). Gotta love consistency ...

I'm reviving this thread instead of starting a new one since there was really no answer to the problem for the post 2007 models. My 2008 is now doing the same thing starting about three weeks ago. I went to the dealer today for a state inspection sticker and told them of the fuel pump noise that is intermittent. Obviously they must have the car and witness the noise themselves so I'll be making an appointment later today to coordinate with a loaner car. I gave them the number to the TSB to show that it's not uncommon although mine is not one of those included.

At the same time they are going to address the creaky power driver's seat that includes almost every model they made for several years. Oddly there is a TSB for that and it lists the tools needed for the repair but no part numbers! That will slow progress.

Hopefully this will lead to some answers which will eventually get posted here.

Appointment is Feb 22 so hopefully I'll have some good information to post a few days after that. I realize this problem is not widespread like the transmission whine but it just might help those that are dealing with it. It took two years for it to start with mine. It now occurs every time I start the car cold (sat for 24 hours or more) so it's not getting any better. In the old days when the fuel pump was mounted on the engine, if it made noise it was on its way out and had to be replaced. I don't know if that is so with it mounted in the tank but it is irregular and I don't wish a stranding due to failure of the pump. I will push this to the top, as best as a consumer can do, with Toyota if need be, I sure hope it doesn't come to that. I am tired of fighting this car, really tired.

Just got the call this morning and they heard the fuel pump whining, Hooray! The Mother Ship said to replace the pump rather than change out the resistor on the firewall. In addition to the pump the parts have been ordered to repair the squeaky drivers seat from the TSB. With any luck I'll have it back Friday.

If I understand correctly the tank has to be dropped to access the pump so I wonder what will happen to the 1/2 tank of fuel that's in it? I do hope they remove it and put it back in but that remains to be seen.

I'm anxiously waiting for your report on the seat fix. Mine is becoming squeaky too. But I don't understand--you said they ordered parts but the TSB doesn't specify any parts?

I talked to someone I usually don't deal with because my service writer was off. He is the one that said parts were ordered which is wrong according to the TSB. I spoke with him prior to reading the whole TSB. He was just relaying a message and not really in the know.

Dealer called late this afternoon and said car is ready to pick up. I'll do so on Saturday morning. I did mention that it had 1/2 tank of fuel in it and I expected the same in the tank when I picked it up tomorrow. I'll report if both corrections worked or not after I've had a chance to drive it for a little while.

I don't expect you'll have any problem. I'm not even sure they have to drop the tank. That's usually how American cars do it - no access cover. But even if they do they have to be equipped to lower a full tank.
Had the brake lines changed on my '99 F-250. One runs behind the tank so they had to lower it. The shop owner is a friend of mine so I apologized for having the tank half full - that's 20 gallons! He said no problem, we have the equipment.

I don't expect a problem, if it's close to where it was I'll be happy. This entire dealership is so small (and the only one within 55 miles from me) that the entire thing would fit in the garage of the Chevy/Ford dealerships I grew up with. To put it in perspective they can get two cars in the showroom if they are really careful.

Wow, you must live in a wonderfully isolated place. I just did a search and came up with 17 Toyota dealers within 49 miles of me.

Well, the bridge to Mexico (one of many) is just the other side of town. This area is not known for its wealth and prosperity..........or Toyota and Honda dealerships!

Just drove the 30 miles back from the dealer. No noise from the fuel pump, no squeak from the driver's seat.
The fuel pump access hatch is below the rear seat (must be removed) so dropping the tank isn't necessary. The squeak in the seat is gone but the creak from the plastic cladding around it & at the base is not. It was lessened a great deal though. Maybe it's just protesting my 265lb arse sitting on it? So far so good, I'll post more here as I drive it more. Oh, the fuel filter in the tank was also replaced, likely part of the fuel pump assembly.

EDIT: I just read my copy of the work order......the first thing it says is "removed fuel tank from vehicle" and the last is "reinstalled fuel tank on vehicle". What? The tech specifically told me he did not do that and he is the only one that works on our cars. It also said "test drove vehicle, problem solved". The odometer was exactly the same as when I took it in, I keep track of such things. I'm not griping, I don't care how it was repaired, just that it was fixed. Old Bird is scratching his head feathers on this one.

The car is still within the warranty period so there was no charge for any of the work.
