After researching for a year and visiting the dealer on November 30, we finally got our 2011 7-passenger V6 4WD Rav4 last Friday! We are very disappointed with the gas mileage. The best so far is just over 21. Any suggestions?

Window sticker says what? Combined mileage: 21. sounds like you hit right on the nose. 21 to 24 in city driving is what you can expect. 25 to 28 on extended highway driving in warm weather. nothing wrong with your RAV as far as I can tell. What mileage were you expecting from a 4 wheel drive V6?

It's new, so give it some time to break in. However, you are not going to see a whole lot better than say 22-23mpg in, light-footed, combined driving. If the weather is cold, significantly less.

The window sticker said 21 city 26 highway. We drove 100 miles home on an interstate. We expected better than 21 for that drive.
Keep it below 2000 RPM (70 mph or less) and you should get 27-28 MPG easily.

V6 + 4WD is listed as
19/26

Haven't said that I get mostly 16 to at most 21 mpg. This is mostly city driving (ie stop and go with hills etc)

I did get 25 mpg once on my trip from SF to LA with 7 ppl. (speeds were 80 to 90 mph)

If you really cared about mpg, then suggestions would be to keep it below 2000 rpm when accelerating. Stay the speed limit (ie 65 or so) any faster your mpg will decrease.

As mentioned it's 19 city 26 highway. The engine is no where close to even thinking about breaking in, give it some slack! Give it 5000 miles or so then check.

My '06 sport v6 AWD was getting about 28 mpg about a month into ownership doing 80 with the AC on when I drove home for holiday. Is the 2011 really that much different? I was thinking about picking a new one up and cant see why the same engine and vehicle combo would get so much worse mileage?

My 2010 has around 7k on it and has averaged 22.7 over those miles (I drive in the city almost exclusively). I have seen as high as 27, as low as 19.

I will never understand why people continue to post about "bad mileage" on their first tank home from the dealership. First, who knows if its really full. Second, its a brand new engine and drivetrain, give it some time.

You getting 21 in the city or combine?

I just rented a 2010 Rav4 4X4 4cyl with 33K and I had just put 385 miles on it. It's mostly highway miles and it average 25. The car is worn out and abuse from all the driving. Every single pot hole i went over, i can hear the whole shaking.

it's a big difference when I rented a 2010 with 18 miles on it last year.

I am planning to get the same car setup as yours, V6 4X4 with 3rd seating. This is one of the car that offer decent mileage, reliable, holds its value and looks good on the outside.

On another thread I just answered a similar question--- 24.1 to 24.2 mpg at mostly 75mph highway driving, with city mixed in. Hard acceleration driving or easy, the same mileage after 3500 miles with a V-6, every fill-up.

Same problem with gas mileage with the 2011 V6 4WD as others have reported. Actual for me is about 18.5, with about 60% driving in town and 40% highway. Ironically the best mileage was 23.6, achieved when thrashing the car on a twisty 2-lane road over mountains (50%) and most of the rest highway/Interstate driving. The EPA estimates are unrealistic - dyno testing with no air/wind or topographical and with limited rolling (tires) resistance, also with no people and cargo weight.

Give it some time to break in the engine. If gas mileage still low after 5,000 miles, let me know, their are a few things that can be done in order to increase gas mileage without losing your warranty.

The specific route can make a whole lot of difference. In my old V6 on my standard highway route (2-hour trip to my parents' house), I would get about 28 in one direction, but only 23 in the other direction (FWIW, my new 2011 I4 is more like 28 & 25 respectively). This is a fairly hilly/mountainous route with an overall elevation change (hence the directionality); I imagine that a trip across Iowa corn country would produce somewhat different results :)

I complained to my service department about getting 13-15L/100km only and he said, yeah, the you'll never get what the tests say cause they do it in a controlled environment in unrealistic driving conditions...haha.

Well, when I don't regularly drive my Rav4 to work, I get about 13L/100km and if I drive it to work regularly, then I get about 15L/100km. Reason is that there is a huge hill that I have to go up everyday to get home from work.
