2011 SR D-Cat 2.2 turns out to be the T180 engine de-tuned to 150bhp

So I just rang Toyota (UK) to find out why the 2011 D-Cat auto won't shift into higher gears for ages and revs at around 3-4k for 10-15 secs before changing. Turns out its not a standard automatic with 6 seperate gears, but instead a variable transmission with one gear that has the sensation of a gear change when the torque bands are changed (via pulleys).

It also turns out this is the original 180 bhp engine but just de-tuned to 150 bhp for emissions sakes. Was very surprised at both bits of info.

Anyways, question to the audience is, does anyone know if its possible to unlock the engines potential to be 180bhp again?

Cheers

Here's a bit more on the CVT:

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a transmission that can change steplessly through an infinite number of effective gear ratios between maximum and minimum values. This contrasts with other mechanical transmissions that offer a fixed number of gear ratios. The flexibility of a CVT allows the driving shaft to maintain a constant angular velocity over a range of output velocities. This can provide better fuel economy than other transmissions by enabling the engine to run at its most efficient revolutions per minute (RPM) for a range of vehicle speeds. Alternatively it can be used to maximize the performance of a vehicle by allowing the engine to turn at the RPM at which it produces peak power. This is typically higher than the RPM that achieves peak efficiency.

Most certainly any tinkering with the engine to increase output would render the warranty null and void. Leave it be.

It seems that there is a degree of misrepresentation by Toyota UK as they refer to it as a six-speed automatic, although according to your description it is a step-programmed CVT. With that one wonders why Toyota simply didn't allow the CVT to function as a CVT so that the engine could operate in its optimal powerband regularly. As for the engine, someone no doubt will or already has come out with a turbocharger to increase the Diesel's output, but as RTexasF points out installing one would likely void the warranty. Maybe after the warranty has expired . . .;)

Yes was very surprised. I don't mind the CVT idea, just wish they make it more efficient by not letting it rev so high all the time. I find myself having to flick the supposed manual option on to make it shift earlier and stay below 2k rpm, otherwise it goes up to 3-4k and hangs there for a while, which is only what i'd expect if i was pushing the accelerator hard.

The turbo on its already quite large, and its quick(ish) for what it is, will just take some getting used to.

Overall though love the car. something about rav4's always gives me a better sense of ownership, maybe because they're slightly unique in that not every tom dick and harry has one. Most SUV's i see are Disco 4's, Q5's, XC90/60's, Sportage's.

Funny thing is, we've test drove all of the above before buying the RAV and still ended up with the RAV.

Send a PM to parts-king and ask him about a chip kit. He's the parts guy at Lindop Toyota and they sell a chip kit that will unleash the extra horses on the diesel.

Your 2011 D-Cat auto's transmission is U660F from Aisin warner and it is not Cvt.

Official explanation detune power is to limit torque to level that gearbox can handle. Sounds ok because other engine used with 2GR-FE (Venza,RX350) does not exceed 350 Nm torque. 2AD-FHV as high power model can (up to 400Nm), now as detuned 340Nm.

But if you want to tune it up, contact http://www.steinbauer.cc/ or http://promotech.se/

Toyota's diesel ECUs made by Denso are so far unable for chiptuning, only boxtuning works. Only 1ND-FTV ECU can be chiptuned because ECU is made by Bosch.
Many people have tried fool some sensors in these diesels but there are so many safety mechanism that nobody has managed. In Japan maybe somebody knows but information has not reached Europe.
