Good morning all. :) Finally, our new 2012 RAV4 Limited AWD 6 cyl arrived and is on the road. She runs great and is a huge leap in ride and comfort from my 2005. You can see her development and modification on the Garage Forum.

The 2012 came with 225/65/R17 tires. I am planning to buy new OEM wheels and tires and have a question for the forum...

Does anyone have any experience with running larger tires on a 2012? If so how large can you go with any lifting and/or suspension modification?

Ultimately my desire is to transfer the 2012 wheels and tires to the 2005 to save some $$$. Shoot I don't even know if they will fit?

Your thoughts and comments are welcomed.

Best regards. Shorty sends...

What do u mean by "larger".......wider, taller, both???? Not sure what u r trying to accomplish but tire height/diameter is a very important number to pay attention to. If u start straying away very much from the stock height (a taller tire)......performance will be affected. Kinda like riding a 10 speed bike, it's harder to pedal a higher gear than a lower gear.

Stock 225/65/17 mathematically is 25.52" tall and 8.86" wide. If you are planning to go with the look of a wider tire, but remain very close to original/stock height/diameter (same mechanical leverage), a 245/60/17 tire will gain a little more than 3/4" in width, while retaining almost stock height and a 255/55/17 tire will gain just under 1 1/4" in width while retaining almost stock height.

Do your math on tire/wheel size figuring, it's easy.......

225 X .65 X 2 / 25.4 + 17 = 25.52" tall
225 / 25.4 = 8.86" wide

I am running 245/65-17 with no issues.

You better check your math. A 225/65/17 is 28.5" tall.
