  1. Changed Head Gasket But Now Won't Fire

    4.1 Faults & Fixes
Screwed up and didn't have enough antifreeze in car and it got to 11° F. It had done fine when it got that cold before, but I forgot and left it with the engine pointing out of the carport facing the wind that night. It overheated when I cranked it to warm it that morning. It acted fine after...

Filled it with top hose while engine was running until water came out top of radiator. Still overheating. The fan still never kicks on, so to me that means it's still not circulating correctly. I think my worst fear is true... the oil still seems like it's getting some water in it. I changed...

Changed water pump. It was definitely bad, but that didn't fix it either. Hope it's an air pocket like y'all describe. I'll try your suggestions. I was worried that there was old coolant/oil gunk clogging the block. Has anyone seen anything like that after a blown head gasket?

Did a radiator flush... no change. Thermostat is new but I still tested it - fine. Gotta be the water pump.

:thumbs_up::thumbs_up: Success!!! Engine runs great... lots of power, but.... it's overheating for some reason. :wall :wall :wall The radiator fans aren't coming on and the hose from the (new) thermostat to the radiator is barely warm. I didn't really feel like messing with it any...

BTW... here is the photo that was in the manual I had: The book said to use the "timing marks", not the "assembly reference marks".

That certainly makes sense, but it sure doesn't sound like the description in the book(s) I have. Both of them describe lining up a single set of dots, not both sets. Unless someone disagrees, that is what I'll try later today.

So.... after rechecking the timing belt TWICE, it still sounded the same. I looked at the camshafts last night and I'm pretty sure I had the timing marks misaligned. I took the exhaust camshaft out and reinstalled it, paying closer attention to "timing marks" versus "assembly marks", but it was...
  9. Changed Head Gasket But Now Won't Fire

I was out of town visiting the parents over the weekend (mother just got out of the hospital), so I didn't get a chance to get back to the car until last night. I reset the ECM so no error codes were present and retried starting it. The P0335 code kept returning - Crankshaft Position Sensor. I...

Saw the procedure in the Haynes manual and it did say you have to remove the intake on the AWD to change the knock sensor. :wall

Thanks... I read through that thread and its resolution was to replace the IGN fuse. I'm pretty sure I checked that already, but I'll be sure to check it again.when I get home. That's what I thought too... don't see how those sensors could have been affected. The 1999 has both crankshaft and...

Finally got the codes read: P0110 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor P0115 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor P0120 - Throttle Position Sensor P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor I seriously doubt all these sensors are bad, unless I somehow zapped them when I...

I have short thick arms, and had no problem accessing that area from under the car. I was able to remove the intake manifold bolts from there also, so the knock sensor should be a piece of cake. The knock sensor is below the intake manifold on the 2WD as shown in the photo above. I've seen...

Definitely done that already. I'm going to disassemble the ignition coil side items and recheck everything again tonight. It's probably something simple, but I'm so burnt out working on it I'm just missing it.
  15. Changed Head Gasket But Now Won't Fire

    4.1 Faults & Fixes
I just finished changing the head gasket on my 1999 RAV4 and am unable to get it to start now. I've checked and rechecked every connection 100 times, and it looks like I'm definitely gonna need some help diagnosing my problem. One thing to consider: I mistakenly touched a ground wire to the hot...

I just did a head gasket replacement on a 1999 and the knock sensor is easily accessible from underneath the vehicle. This photo from the stickied "Annotated Pictures" thread I have included here shows the view: No way should that cost a couple hundred dollars.
