Hello all,

Im from new zealand!
I have always been interested/curious of the rav4's. So i recently got a 3 door 1995 model with the 5 speed manual gearbox.

Now iv had alot of 'real' offroaders and still have a beasty nissan terrano vg30 but the rav4 has confused me on the awd system.
I searched alot on the web trying to find out what these original models had in them???

Are the 1995 J models full time AWD or part time AWD engaging when it starts slipping also this centre diff lock thing im presuming just locks all the wheels to spin at exactlt the same speed???

I can find lots of info on later models but not much of the system in the first models.

So knowledge or advice would be great thanks!

Full time mechanical 4wd. The diff lock electro-machanically locks the open centre diff to stop you losing all movement when 1 wheel loses grip. 2 wheels will need to slip, 1 front and 1 rear, so probably a cross-axle type of situation.
