Hey All,

Been a few years since I've gotten rid of my rav4 2 door. I'm looking at buying another, a 96 manual with 4wd.
I really don't know much about how 4wd works mechanically. I know before even looking at the car that the clutch needs replacing according to owner.
Any guesses to cost of rebuilding, via mechanic?
Is the 4wd system if it were to fail, part of the tranny and hence a tranny rebuild would bring everything up to new standards?

Thanks,
Joe

Rav4's 4WD system is closer to AWD cars, than to the SUV's, so it is relatively simple. But replacing clutch is a PITA, so it would be on the high side of the estimate. My guess is around $800-$1000.

You might want to find out if it has 5th gear problem and if it does, replace it at this time. Otherwise, it doesn't need anything specific.

Thanks for the info Leon,

I missed out on that particular car, looking at a 97 4wd manual tomorrow. Clutch recently replaced according to owner. So as far as 4wd system, if that ends up going, what is involved in fixing/rebuilding?
