Good day.

My Rav does not want to start.
Had been having some problems with fuel mileage, could stall and not start while warm. But always starter first crank when cold.

New leads, new plugs, new fuel filter.
Gets fuel to rail.
Gets good spark.
All vacuum lines OK.

Starts on start spray but does not go.

What on earth could it be.

There’s another thread that seems to have a similar issue - it seems to be ongoing, but it’s a place to start!

Since it starts on starter fluid, that’s a good place to start. Likely the temp sensor as mentioned in that thread.

Does it throw any codes? Check engine light?

Recently I had my RAV4 up in four towers for about two months. When I went to start it, nothing. It had everything it needed. Fuel, Spark, the air filter was good, it cranked well. We started to check everything from rear to front. I had a new WALBRO 255LPH High-Pressure in-tank fuel pump and injectors (Supra N/A engine) So I changed it. End of problem. Try also Lucas Fuel Cleaner/Lubricant.

-- Is the computer throwing any codes?

-- Does the CEL lamp light briefly when the key is turned to the On position (but engine off)?

-- What is the voltage on the battery?

-- Please confirm: Does your Rav4 have a distributor? (For the archives: Some early 1998 Rav4s may have distributors? I cannot keep straight how the crossover years, like late 1997-early 1998 work.)

-- Consider removing as many of the 10mm bolts on the upper timing cover, prying the cover a bit, and watching the timing belt while someone tries to start the Rav4. Does the timing belt seem to be turning the camshaft? Or does the timing belt look like it is slipping?

-- Check the crank position sensor as described at the guide "Starting & Running Problems" at Elle's 1996-00 Toyota Rav4 Site
