1AZ or 2AZ from FWD into AWD RAV

Hey all and really glad to be in the forum.
So is the way when we usually find that these forums that I need help.

My 1AZ with 280,000km has had the head go and I'm just gonna do a transplant so on the hunt for engine.

My question is, can I use a 1AZ-FSE from another car (Likely FWD rather than AWD) such as a Caldina? As I'm struggling to find one with low enough mileage to make it worthwhile.

Cheers,
Ben

I dunno. I have a 2001 RAV4 with 140000 miles (1AZ). Fine little engine. No problems. I expect to go 200,000 miles easy. Uses no oil. If your engine is in otherwise good shape, just do the heads. A used engine is rolling the dice.
So my engine is shot, water throughout block and beyond economical repair.
People keep telling me a fwd 1az will not fit, that the block is different, however they are not speaking from experience, just assuming. Can anyone confirm?
Oops, I just noticed in in the RAV4.2 forums, the below advise was for a RAV4.1. I think the advise would still be good.

The 1MZ-FE, 3MZ-FE, 3VZ-FE engines are all good candidates. The 1MZ and 3MZ have aluminum blocks so the weight is not a significant factor although the 3VZ has been succefully transplanted several times. I'm at the starting point of a 3MZ-FE engine, basically it's an updated 1MZ-FE. You can get a JDM low mileage FWD engine at a pretty good price.

have updated the title to better reflect my situation as sadly still haven't got an answer.
Just wanting to know if a 1 or 2az from a fwd like calling, blade etc, will go into my awd rav with purely changes of bolt on accessories?

The AWD Toyota engines have mounting points on the block for the transaxle that the FWD engines do not have. You must purchase an AWD engine and they usually cost more.

Yeah there are none available in the whole country, have been trying to get one for months now.

Do you get JDM engines in Australia? They are usually not too overpriced and they are low mileage.
Unfortunately I'm in New Zealand not Australia.
You talking just an engine imported from Japan?
Sorry about that, I was talking to an Australian before you and wasn't paying attention. I must have misread your typing accent, LOL.

Yes, the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) engines that are exported all over the world. Here in the states the JDM engines usually aren't OBDii compliant and people that live in states where they do emissions testing and use the OBDii read out to evaluate part of the emissions tests can be very big problem.
Any 1az or 2az will suit. For 3z you will need new wiring and cpu. So easily is to put the 2.4 inside from any car that use the 2az engine.
What about this point?

The engines mounting points are the same. The cpu is the same. The engenders from toyota are clever enough to make the parts to be easy compatability between the models. So no matter what model or year is the vehicle if it has 1az or 2 you can swap it with your engine. For example I'm driving my car now with engine from avensis.

You can confirm this yourself about only using AWD engines with AWD transaxles because of the mounting points. I admit I'm not familiar with the 1AZ and 2AZ engines but unless those mounting points are there they will not bolt up properly to the AWD transaxle.
Not super keen to spend $1500 on an engine to find it doesn't fit.

From my experience, I know the following engines have blocks that are AWD specific.

3SFE
3SGE
3SGTE
1MZFE
3MZFE

However, I cannot find anything stating that the 2wd and 4wd 1AZ and 2AZ engine blocks are different and I've been looking, you may want to consult a maintenance manual and see how the transaxle bolts to the block.
