Looking for some resident expert advice on removing and installing a 2.0L VVT-i engine from a 2002 AWD Automatic RAV4. Curious if this is easier done out the bottom, out the top.... any tricks or special tools or requirements to complete the job? Note: I have plenty of experience transplanting motors and transmissions, predominantly in American Vehicles (SUV's, Trucks and Cars). Don't need the basics, but am interested in suggestions from those who have had experience with conducting this process on a second gen RAV. Many Thanks!

Hi.

You need to take it down from the underside, the best way is to drop the subframe ( leave the steering rack in the car ) and then lower the engine and gearbox down in one. Its not easy pulling the gearbox of the engine when its int he car. I used a car lifter and a hydraulic lifting table to get the engine/gearbox down.
