Hi Im new. I just came out of last 10 years of Prius so I am spoiled with gas consumption.. I had a 08, 10, and a 13 Prius. I just filled my 2017 Rav 4 Xle 4wd, with first tank and only got 20.06 mpg.:frown I live in south Florida, I had it in ECO mode I tried to drive carefully knowing I was going to be in for a shock in my gas consumption, but 20 is unacceptable. I put 231 miles of mixed local and highway 50/50 .My trips average 20-25 minutes. I realize a car needs to break in ..please tell me I will do better than 20 after a while.

I've been averaging 30 MPG with 50/50 city/highway. Do you use the little green ECO leaf light on the dash for a reference for how much you're depressing the gas pedal? Do you do a lot of heavy braking?

First, make sure your parking brake isn't on. Second, where does the indicator for your coolant temperature sit and how long does it take to stabilize from a cold engine to fully warmed up?

I was getting 22-23 when my FWD was new, now that it's broken in I'm getting 26-27. That is with 30/70 city/hwy. I only use sport mode now "IMO drives a million times better" and it hasn't really effected my mpg.

Every vehicle I've owned got better after about 1500 miles.

My point in stating I was a previous Prius driver is that we are VERY aware of breaking, gas pedals, stealth mode. In other words we are "crazy " about how much gas we use and driving correctly to maximize our gas consumption....

seriously..who drives with their parking brake on??

People who aren't aware that it's on. 20 MPG is trash gas mileage, break-in period or not. So if it's not something mechanical, then it's your driving habits.

I ask about the parking brake and the coolant temperature because those are the two most common things that you can look for. A stuck caliper is also possible, but extremely unlikely in a brand new car. If the parking brake and coolant temp check out okay, then re-evaluate how quickly you accelerate and decelerate. If you're moving with the flow of traffic instead of focusing on driving economically, you'll get poor fuel economy because everyone drives like a knucklehead. :wink

I was wondering that as well. It's not like the car doesn't flash "Brake On" if you even attempt something like that.

Another thing to try, make sure you don't have a pair of underwear hanging out of the trunk and acting like a parachute. :surprise

FWIW, driving techniques that maximize MPG in a Prius aren't always the best approach for a gas powered car.

I'm surprised you didn't go for the Rav4 HV instead of the gas model.

The lease was not very good on the HV or the Prius that is why I went with the Rav..they suckered me into a GREAT lease..thinking....

1) I dont drive as much as I used too
2) Price of gas is stable...for now
3) Even at 25 MPG it would cost me the same as the Prius....

I hope I havent made a HUGE mistake

I would think that if you've had 4 new vehicles in 10 years, the amounts lost to depreciation on those resales would make the fuel expenses completely secondary.

You obviously do not lease cars..its a different animal than a purchase and too complicated for this forum..Its all about business..

Assuming 3 years and a "loss" of 25 MPG compared to Prius, you're not really looking at a huge amount of added cost. Pump up the tires and drive sensibly, it'll get better after a few thousand miles.

Here's my suggestion: reset your average MPG. When you accelerate, make sure the ECO indicator on the dash stays on as much as possible. If it disappears, you're accelerating too hard and wasting unnecessary fuel. Don't exceed 2,500 RPMs, unless you're getting on the highway. Also, do your best to avoid braking by coasting for as long as you can without annoying drivers behind you. Do this for about a week and see if your fuel economy improves.

I believe the sway warning is based on time and how much you weave inside or out of your own lane. When the meter runs out, it'll remind you to pull over and rest.

It sounds like it might've been a better transition to go to the RAV4 Hybrid over the gas version, but there's always another time when your lease runs out! The gas RAV4 is pretty economical, but it will drink a lot of fuel if you let it. Give it some time and let us know after a few days.

I am averaging 25.5 MPG at 60% city 40% hiway. I have 2200 miles on mine, and mileage has dropped about 1 MPG since new, likely because of winter temps and slower traffic. This is the 6th brand new Toyota I've bought, and I've never seen more than 1mpg difference from new to broken in MPG, so no I don't believe that increase unless there is some considerable parasitic loss from tight rings and bearings in motor or transmission.

Likely the biggest culprit is trip distance (short trips), stop and go driving, or windy conditions.

As long as the engine is turning you are using fuel. Lower RPM = less fuel. So coasting really only helps if it flips into a higher gear. Sticking it into neutral might be more help.

I don't think that will help at all. When coasting above 20 MPH, the torque converter locks and absolutely no fuel is delivered to the engine - it just becomes an air compressor. Putting in neutral would allow the engine to keep eating fuel while you're slowing down.
