I know I'll be generating a few groans with this question, but....

2017 Rav 4 with the automatic liftgate....

Passenger side tailgate taillight assembly (inner)

I'm pretty certain at this point that you have to remove the automatic strut in order to get to the 2 outer tail light fastening nuts / Is it safe to just unbolt the lift strut from the edge of the lid or will it give me a big surprise?

Your help will be much appreciated

thanks

Yes! Took about an hour. The brace running up & down the door edge had to be loosened enough to access the two outer light housing nuts. The actual lifting strut is not touched. I was thinking the system might energize while working on it, so the battery was disconnected first. The other three remaining fasteners were removed after popping off the inner door panel. Not too difficult and the fasteners are 10mm. There is one electrical connection.
After putting everything back together and connecting the battery, the memory regarding the door settings were lost, so it took a few minutes to get back to normal.
