I saw something on another forum that Toyota wants you to go very easy for the first 600 miles and to not go on the expressway at all. We might get our new Prime this coming week and we'll want to take it Upstate. That will be 100 mile of expressway.

Please tell me about the ''break in period. And what did you do?

When is the first oil change?

From the manual:
■Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle,
observing the following precautions
is recommended:
●For the first 200 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 500 miles (800 km):
Do not tow a trailer.
●For the first 600 miles (1000 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high
speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low
gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed
for extended periods.

Note that this seems to be similar to an ICE vehicle. With hybrid operation, even if you drive at a constant speed, the ICE engine speed is constantly changing. So just vary your speed a little bit and you should be fine. It does not say anything about highway driving other than driving at extremely high speeds.

The first schedule oil change for normal service is 10K miles.

By the way, the manuals are available online. Then you can download it and read before the car arrives. Lots of pages.

Thank you, I do have the online manual and I've gone through it but it's hard to search for things and it's hard to make sense of things without the cars in front of me. We could have the car this week so I'll just do like I usually do and take it easy for the first 1000 miles. It will be fine.

Where the problem comes in with the Prime is measuring mileage. What matters is miles on the ICE - if you drive mostly on EV from the start, by 600 miles you might have less than 100 on the ICE, and there is no easy way to tell. We decided to drive mostly in HV mode, forcing the engine to run a lot, for the first 500 miles. We've now hit 1000 miles, used 1.5 tanks of gas (which should mean over 600 miles), and so I finally decided it was safe to floor it in Auto mode at a stoplight last night.

All new Toyotas come with a paper owners manual. Did you not get one? If not, you should talk to your dealer or file a complaint with Toyota corporate. (You can also buy one from Helm Inc which prints the OEM manuals for Toyota).

If that doesn't prove fruitful, you can often buy the paper manuals on Ebay. I think those come from rental cars. I did that for the last two Toyotas that I ordered so I could read through the manuals before the car arrived.
