I wish the tech had ignored the ants and pulled out the dipstick to look at the oil level and plugged in an OBD2 scanner for DTC codes.The knocking noise sounds horrible. Could be a rod bearing. Outside chance it's something less catastrophic like a failing high pressure fuel pump; or jammed valve lifter. I think it's a rod bearing .

 

pitiful if it's a rod bering. Could be $1-3,000 repair. Strange on a one year old car unless oil levels were not proper, overheated, etc. Does the 3-yr. warranty come into play?

 

Rod knock is normally a lower frequency, a thunk sound. There is definitely a higher clicking sound, so my guess is something in the valve train. But still, very bad sound.

 

Maybe the ants ate all of that sweet 0w-16 and starved the bottom end, ouch!

 

At least they're not fire ants...

I don't know if it's a mic thing, but it doesn't QUITE sound like rod knock TO ME.

Even if you're ok with the 10k interval, you should still check and top off your oil.

Its also awesome when owners blame Toyota or the dealer for all their woes

 

A visit to my dealership for warranty work had the car come back with a lot of ants in and around the grill. They parked it underneath a cherry tree…

 

Bad enough here in iowa with wasps etc on a car or truck sitting out like when the lock down was on.

No ant problem in rural Oregon. We have massive squadrons of insane wild turkeys gobbling everything.

Sounds like it's ready to "throw a rod". Engine repair time. The ants? Spray the wheels. They need to return to the ground. Once that's done, spray around. They'll start to be removed.

The engine would be part of the power train warranty which is five years or 60,000 miles in the USA.

I agree. Unless the dealership can prove it's the owner's fault, the 60,000/3-5 yr warranty may in play.
