I am changing the clutch on our 2001 Rav4 2.0L Manual Trans, Front Wheel Drive. In order to remove the trans axle, the Haynes manual is saying the front exhaust pipe has to come out, and the longitudinal and lateral suspension crossmembers have to come out. it looks like there is enough room without doing this. the only tough thing could be the rear trans / engine mount. Does anyone know if these three items have to come out to get the trans out? Haynes is usually very conservative in saying things have to come out because they are working on new cars in garages with air tools, rather than on my driveway with 16 year old rusty bolts.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

IMO sometimes these how-to manuals remove extra parts to take their photos. I only remove the minimum due to the chance of breaking rusted bolts as you mention. Extra jacking or blocking can often give the little extra room needed.
