Hey guys,

I want to change my differential and transfer case oils.

I have 2 brand new bottles of Lucas synthetic 75w90 gear oil that I ordered from Rockauto that I thought would do the trick but now I see Toyota specifies 75w85 and makes no mention of synthetic.

The Lucas meets the GL5 spec like the manual calls for. Will it work for the Rav?

Sure. Plenty of owners mention using 75W-90 gear oil. Some have even used GL-4 spec, even though GL-4 doesn't meet the hypoid gear spec of GL-5 oil. Rav4's prior to 2013 called for 75W-90.

Are there any downsides to using 75W-90 GL-5 in the Gen 4? The only thing I can think of is that the oil will become marginally more viscous (90 weight versus 85 weight) when it heats up, which would theoretically cause more friction/drag and therefore lower fuel economy.

I used Redline 75W-85 GL-5 in my 2013 Rav4 https://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-50104-75W85-Oil/dp/B000J3G8KE/.

I used the Lucas synthetic 75w90 gear oil when I changed out the differential and transfer case oil. No issues and will use again when the time comes.
