So, I missed a call from Toyota today but they are going to call back tomorrow to discuss these failing filters. In the meantime I decided to replace the YZZN1 filter that's been on my new Rav4 for just about 2K miles. Yes you guessed it, this one has the resin cracked in 2 places which allowed the media to pull away from the center tube. I bought this one, along with another one, from a local dealership in Prescott AZ so this makes 4 different lots with 4 different manufacturing date codes, spanning two years, that have failed. If Toyota doesn't want my new filters back to inspect them then I'll gladly cut all ten open for those who believe this issue isn't a common failure. Also for those wondering, I installed a Microguard Select filter which is what I'll be using from now on.

I'm going to use a Napa Gold 1394. Understand it is made by Wix and the same as a Wix 51394. It holds more oil than the standard size, and therefore you can put in all 5 quarts of a jug and not have a 1/2 qt left over every time. You will overfill by few ounces, which won't hurt anything.

Wix 10332? What should we use?
Use the WIX 51394. It is what the 8th gen Camry with the same engine as 5th gen RAV uses. Here are the specs so you can compare the bypass PSI and dimensions of the Wix 10332 and 51394.

Here is an enlargement of the excellent post #1 photo showing the cellulose media pulled away from the central metal tube leaving a large gap I circled in red. The dirty, unfiltered oil and metal debris would have poured right down that gap back into the engine bypassing any filtration by the pleated cellulose.

I don't understand all this stuff but I guess unfiltered oil can get into your engine but flow is not compromised? I'm hoping that my sometimes sub 5k oil changes have engine internals that are spotless.

I like the higher bypass number
More filtration time when the oil is cool

I decided to open one of my filters as well. And found zero issues. On the contrary, the filter looks pretty well made.

And, are they any good?
IMHO they are better than OEM.

In my case, I'm just stocking up on filters for my new PHEV. I might not even change the filter for a couple of years. I'm scheduling annual oil changes, just so I don't forget to do them. (I love this.)

I used the two year free dealer Toyota Care services, so I have had THREE of these POS YZZN1 filters on my gas model 2021 XLE ( 1000 mile break-in DIY and two dealer installed.) Also, of course the original different part number filter which is factory installed and the same glued design...so FOUR total. It is my hope beyond hope that I lucked out and that these crappy Densos have not hurt my bearings and engine internals.
