An acquaintance has a Rav4 I'd like to buy. He got it about 6 months ago knowing it went through a quart of oil every oil change. The condition otherwise is pretty good, it's a 4 door and the timing belt was recently done. Its decent except for the oil consumption.

My acquaintance said after a thousand miles it was blowing oil out of the tailpipes and the dipstick was popping out. He replaced the PCV valve and the dipstick stopped popping out, but he hasn't driven it to determine if it's still blowing oil out of the pipes.

As far as I've known these engines were pretty bulletproof, and these kind of problems at 140k miles are odd. I can see the stuck PCV valve, but I can't see the reason for the oil consumption.

Anyone have insight?
