Skimming through this website I noticed 2 people have had this problem.Im the 3rd.
The firewall is made of beer can thick metal.
The nuts that hold the pedal ,break away from the firewall.
I called Toyota and they said no recall.
I had a bodyshop weld a new bracket for $200.
This is bound to be a common problem.

Be aware there are OBDII sensors for pedal position.
Mine is not stock position ,but so far no CEL.Whew.

kkagawa, can I ask if your throttle was sticking at all, and I mean at 0% throttle? I've never really gotten down to looking down in the footwell, but for the past two or three years, my '97's throttle has stuck quite badly. The only remedy I've found is to quickly tap the pedal to get it to un-stick. Hearing your problem (and apparently that of two others) is a bit concerning.

Did you try the throttle body/IAC cleaning routine?

The rust pedal mount has come up before in the forum, your the 3rd one with the same problem since I have joined.
Was there any other things that you noticed other than the side to side movement?

Maybe we should all have a look down there once in a while...

Never heard of such problem. Is your car heavily rusted?
No rust at all on mine .
There are 2 nuts welded to the beer can gauge firewall.
They just broke loose.
If your pedal starts to wobble ,it doesnt pull the accelerator
cable fully.Feels like a weak engine.
