I found out that when the Remote Connect Access Trial ends it will cost $8/month.

I think this is just another thing Toyota screws its customers with. Ford’s equivalent their customers do not pay for that service or other equivalent services that Toyota offers.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel this part of Toyota's service sucks and is way behind when pleasing its customers?

Actually, Ford’s “Remote Access” is not free. Cheaper than Toyota Remote Connect, but not free.
From Ford site:

What do I need to make it work?
You need specific dealer-installed hardware in your vehicle2. You also need the Remote Access app on your phone – it’s free! Finally, you need to activate a Remote Access account – $49 per year3.

Important Notes:
2. Price varies per vehicle
3. Additional sales tax and fees may apply
4. This feature requires additional dealer-installed components. See your dealer for price and remote options.

So, it looks like with Ford you have to get the dealer to install the hardware (variably priced depending on vehicle) and pay an annual fee of $49 plus sales tax and “fees”

But hey, the app is free
