Hello,

I want to add a backup camera to my 2011 RAV4 base. Looking at the previous threads here, the recommendation is to go for a head unit with a screen or a mirror. I would like to upgrade the head unit.

Have folks used the Android head units and have any reviews? The one I am thinking of installing is Seicane S6947 as it has the latest Android version.

How do these compare to the name branded ones like Pioneer or Kenwood? I expect some issues, but are the Pioneer and Kenwood ones worth the significantly higher price.

Thanks,

AKR

I have learned from experience that the China head units work quite ok and produce an acceptable sound.
Original head units work better and mostly produce perfect sound.

When I had a China head unit I found the sound quality quite poor. So I changed the factory speakers in to 6 Focal speakers.
The change was noticable but still not perfect. Until I connected my new Kenwood Carplay head unit... What a difference...

One thing to keep in mind if it is a possible concern in the future, the Android head units have no support for Sirius/XM.
Many people with unlimited data plans don't worry about that, but it is something to keep in mind if you take driving vacations... no WiFi or cell coverage = no radio.

Another issue is the progression of the technology. Look at the progress in tablets and smartphones over the last 5 years. Before the aftermarket "ready fit" units were available, people spent many hours and $$$$ making custom mounts to put their iPad in place of their HU. Now, these systems are antiques by comparison, while a basic standard HU with a software link like Android-Auto would still be relevant and would support new phones as they come out.
