Thanks to xurav4 who started this thread:

http://www.rav4world.com/forums/98-...-3-interior/63973-install-automatic-door-locking-upon-gear-shift-2007-rav4.html

and eitingon in that same thread, I found out about this little door lock pulse generator module from Directed Electronics:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8488_Directed+452T.html

Since I didn't want to use relays, and the price was right, I ordered one and installed it today. Seems to work great. It produces a 1 second pulse to lock the doors when I put the shift into reverse. But this module can do more. You can wire it to lock the doors immediately when you turn on the ignition. It can also unlock the doors when you turn off the key. Here is a scan of the first page of the instructions:

https://www.rav4world.com/d1/attachments/mods/photos/Directed452T.jpg

As you can see, it can produce a positive or negative pulse. On the RAV, I needed the negative pulse to apply to the pink lock wire, so I used the green wire. To trigger the pulse I used the violet wire which connects to the red wire for the backup lights. The +12 volts is on the grey wire on the same plug as the pink wires. And finally the black wire is connected to the ground bolt in the kick panel. There is a white plastic bracket at the bottom of that kick panel area, and it has an empty space where the module can be inserted lengthwise and it is held tight.

If you want the doors to lock when you first turn on the ignition, you need to connect the violet wire to the switched 12 volts which can be found on the blue wire in that same plug. If you want the doors to unlock when the ignition is turned off, simply connect the blue wire to the upper pink wire in that plug.

Thanks to everyone, especially xurav4 and eitingon for their fine efforts! This is a great mod!

Tried conecting both pinks (1 lock | 1 unlock) but it didnt work.

*** Eitingon - did you ever get a chance to check your lock/unlock setup?

My setup for locking doors when reverse lights come on:

Green ==> Bottom Pink (lock)
Blue ==> Upper Pink (unlock *diconnected*)
Violet ==> Red (bottom red wire on fuse block - backup lights)
Red ==> Grey (constant +12 volt)
Black ==> Ground (kick panel bolt)

What's the difference between using the relay's and the pulse generator? I'm just looking to auto lock when going from park to drive. The relay is $6 on eBay which is a lot cheaper than the pulse generator.

Also, I took a look at the pdf and on the last page, what's the purpose of the double sided tape to mount the relay? Maybe it'll be self explanatory when I do it but I'm just getting a feel for the mod now. Also, from the pictures, I don't see the t-taps added so I'm assuming whenever it says something like "Connect the wire 30 of the relay to this pink wire" that means to tap the pink wire with wire 30. Am I right?

I have used quick splice (since it was the only kind available at Walmart:p) and found sometimes it was a challenge to crimp while holding both wires. Haven't tried t-tab but would think it may be easier because you will deal with only one wire at a time.

Both methods are reliable if you use correct gauge. Anyway, you should use t-tab if the wires are not the same gauge.

Well, I'm more confused than normal.

My pink wire that is in the middle of the bottom row, of the bottom plug,
has +5 volts on it all the time. When I operate the lock button, the voltage goes to 0, release the button and voltage goes back to + 5 volts.

Can somebody please explain to me how the pulse generator, that I believe puts out either + or - 12 volts will lock or unlock the doors.

OR have I got the wrong plug/wrong wire?

THANKS, Dave

I know this is an old thread but... I've been a lurker and a non-poster for a while so I wanted to add to the forums a bit, so here it goes.

Great modification! Took about 10 minutes - and it was a lot of fun. Thanks guys for the info, my 2011 RAV4 now unlocks when in reverse.

Great stuff here - I hope I can contribute more as the months/years move along. :)

Now there is a much easier and cheaper solution that doesn't require any wiring at all:

Here's a quick review of the auto door lock module from China. I ordered it on March 7, they shipped it on March 15, and I just got it today, April 1. Total cost was $15 with free shipping (slow) and now the price has dropped to a little over $13:

Automatic Door Lock Closing CANBUS OBD system For TOYOTA New Vios Corolla RAV4 Car speed lock device Free shipping on Aliexpress.com

Installation is truly plug and play and takes 5 seconds. Simply plug the unit into your OBD port under the dash. When the car reaches about 12 MPH, (20 KPH), the doors lock. If you stop and one of the doors is opened and shut, the doors will re-lock once you reach 12 MPH again. When you open one of the doors, the hazard lights will blink 5 times. When you shift into Park, all the doors unlock, and when you open the door to exit, the hazard lights blink 5 times. There is no programming, and no options to set. I don't care for the hazard lights, but I guess it doesn't hurt anything. All in all, you can't beat it for the price.

No RAV4 that I have ever heard of can do this from the factory. It could probably be done by installing some aftermarket system. Perhaps some of the more advanced alarm systems offer those features.

Sorry for reviving old thread.. but I just tried to install this module... But to confirm.. yes, you can unlock and lock with just one module.

I got everything to work following JuneBug's instruction on page 1 (To lock and unlock).

I opted to wire the blue wire to the upper pink (to unlock doors upon parking).

On shift to reverse, all doors lock.

However, on shift back to park, only the driver side unlocks. I want it to unlock all doors....

For unlocking, I used the upper pink cable is on the second row from the bottom, on the left.
Do I need to send a double pulse? (how?) Or did I get the wrong upper pink cable to unlock all doors? Any help is appreciated.

I was never able to use techstream to unlock all doors on one key press. Probably because dealership had installed a alarm system.

Hey sorry for reviving such an incredibly old thread. Hopefully you've fixed the issue after all these years, but I wanted to document the fix to this for future readers as I'm attempting to install the door lock pulse generator myself. From what I understand of the service manual wiring diagrams, to fix your problem I think you need to tap into the black wire instead of the upper pink wire for the unlock signal.

In your case I think what's happening is that you're using the "key unlock" to trigger the unlock signal. By default, the 452T unit only sends a single pulse, and the "key unlock" would be the equivalent of pressing the unlock button once on the key hence only the driver side door unlocks. To unlock all doors, use the black wire which should simulate an unlock button press on the driver's side power window switch and should unlock all doors with one pulse only.

So the overall wiring would be:
Green (425T) - Lower Pink (RAV4, lock signal, bottom row middle pink wire, pin #3)
Blue (452T) - Black (RAV4, unlock signal, bottom row leftmost black wire, pin #8)
Red (452T) - Grey (RAV4, constant +12V, upper rightmost grey wire, pin #2, or can use a fuse tap from constant +12V in the nearby fuse box)
Black (425T) - Ground (RAV4, ground, to nearby ground bolt for chassis ground)
Violet (452T) - Red (RAV4, reverse signal)

Doing this should lock all 4 doors when shifting from park to reverse, and all 4 doors should unlock when shifting back from reverse to park.

Now, the problem is this method breaks down when you continue to shift from reverse into drive. Since the 452T can only receive one activation input, shifting from reverse to drive would inactivate the reverse signal and the 452T module would send an unlock pulse as a result. The overall sequence would then be:

1. park->reverse - lock pulse
2. reverse -> drive - unlock pulse (at this point, you'll be in drive and the doors will not be locked which defeats the entire point of this module)
3. drive -> reverse - lock pulse
4. reverse -> park - unlock pulse

Therefore, I don't believe it's possible to use one 452T module to control both lock and unlock while using reverse signal as the activation input.

A workaround would be to use switched +12V power instead of a reverse signal as JuneBug described in the first post. Using switched +12V power will lock the doors when the ignition is turned on and unlock the doors when the ignition is turned off. To do this, change the activation input to be:
Violet (452T) - Blue (RAV4, switched +12V power, bottom rightmost blue wire, pin #1)

What I personally did was use switched +12V power as the activation input and door lock only. I left door unlock unwired since the front driver & passenger doors can be opened using the interior handle with one pull even when locked. I don't have rear passengers 99% of the time, so this was not a problem for me.

Best of luck to anyone that comes across this thread in the future!

Thanks
Victor
