Hi! I'm writing to you about the problem you posted on this page a couple of years ago:
"I recently purchased a pre-owned Rav4, it is a 2006 (gen 3) with about 105k miles on it. I love it and have named it "Stig", which is Swedish for "path".

I have noticed that the transmission makes a whoosh sound when it shifts from 1st - 2nd, its not really loud but definitely hearable. I don't remember if I heard it before the purchase but now I can't stop listening for it while driving. Could this become an issue down the road?

I would really appreciate an answer since I haven't been able to find any solution online!

Hi Adam, I wasn’t involved in the original thread but will try to help a bit.

When the transmission whooshes, does the engine speed flare or do anything unusual at the same time? I’m wondering specifically about the RPM shooting up during the 1-2 shift. If so, that would be a slip either with the engagement of the 2nd gear band or potentially a problem with the torque converter being unable to hold pressure as the Engine speed changes relative to ground speed.

Hi!
Thanks for replying!!

I went out for a drive just now to check and I didn't notice any jump up in the RPMs or weird behaviour from the engine. I recorded a video as well but I don't think my phone picked up the sound to well, but you can still hear it.

Best regards,
Adam
I did hear and see a little rise in the RPM ut that may have been your foot. Doesn’t sound like a flare though.

Okay! Yeah, I think that was my foot...
What is "flare" in this context?

Thanks for your time :)
Flare is a rise in RPM - similar to not lifting from the throttle during a gear change in a manual - when disconnected for a shift, the RPM will flare up before the next gear engages.

I’ve got a 2.5 Automatic also, and it appeared to be mostly normal operation to me too. If you can repeat the problem a bit better another time, please post another video.

Oh, okay! I'll try again tomorrow (it's 9:15 pm here in Sweden) and try to isolate the "fault" better. Thanks!

Hi again! I think this was the best change I had of trying it again. I kept my foot steady and in the same position on the gas the whole time.

Hope this gives a bit of a clearer insight, thanks 😊

Your Rav has the U140F transmission in it. I've said this in other comments, but the U140F is one of the noisiest transmissions I've ever dealt with. It seems to be a reliable transmission, but it's just noisy. I have a 2011 2.5L with the same U140F and, yes, there's a very noticeable whoosh sound from 1st to 2nd--this is totally normal. If you listen close, you should also be able to pick up a slight harmonic whine in the trans around 25mph and again around 45mph. Like I said, they're just noisy transmissions--I have 145k+ miles on mine and it's been whooshing and whining since forever and no amount of fluid change, etc., has made any real difference in it--by my own experience and according to my local Toyota dealer, this is considered normal operation.

Your trans should be just fine. I'd just keep it properly serviced and get used to the noise.

Hi!

This is the best thing I've read today, thanks a bunch for you reply😅

The transmission behaves quite normal otherwise so it's nice to hear that it has been working fine in your rav4!

Have a great day!
