AUX Jack 2020 Retrofit!?

7649 Views 27 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ve4edj
Hi All,

I've been hunting for an aux jack mod for the 2020 for some time and have not seen anything come up. Just was googling around again today and found this!

Anyone seen it or tried it? $100 is a little steep but I might give it a go anyhow, sent them an email to verify functionality. (2020 limited hybrid)

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere, did a search but did not find anything.

I would be hesitant at spending $100 for something that states that it's for 2019 and 2020 since all 2019's came with the AUX port next to the USB media port.

This is from my 2019 brochure:

Yeah I'm definitely hesitant but if they email back saying its compatible I'll give it a try and just get refund if it doesn't work out. The other thing I don't understand is why they would sell it for the 2019 since its factory installed (maybe not in some regions?).

I'm interested in how you would select the aux jack on the audio menu as well...

It should/would act like the USB1 and 2. On mine, without a USB hub plugged into the USB media port, only USB1 is available. I bought a USB hub cable and with this plugged in, I can access USB1 and USB2. I would hope that if you plug this "adapter" cable into your radio, it would trigger the radio to show AUX as a selection. By the way, on my radio, when you rearrange the source selections, the USB2 is shown there even though I didn't have the hub plugged in. Curious if yours shows AUX in this rearrange mode. If not, the jury is still out on this devices functionality.

Also, be careful with China bought devices. Most likely if it doesn't work, they will want it shipped back to them and they might even charge you a restock charge.
I too wonder if:

.... it'll work with a 2021 hybrid xle premium that has the non-Nav JBL system

And

If their Aux In comes up as a separate Audio selection (Aux). Ideally I'd like to see two separate selections: ---- USB --- AUX IN

Also,

I use two ports on a USB Hub.

That Hub connects to the JBL via the single Data USB Port

One port on the Hub gets an MP3 USB stick, the other has a short USB C cable that I can connect to my Samung Galaxy for Android Auto.

When I connect the phone, the MP3 USB is not recognized until the phone is unplugged.

I'm wondering if this is also the case, if something is plugged into the AUX IN ...... does the AUX IN defer to Anroid Auto?

And

When I connect the phone, the MP3 USB is not recognized until the phone is unplugged. --- I believe this is normal. With CarPlay, most hubs will state that it will not work with CarPlay or it describes exactly what you're experiencing. Since my 2019 doesn't have AA, I can't test. My curiosity leads me to have some belief that Toyota used the AUX input after 2019 to accommodate the inclusion of AA.

I'm wondering if this is also the case, if something is plugged into the AUX IN ...... does the AUX IN defer to Anroid Auto? --- As I have stated, AUX is a separate input selection. If I'm using CarPlay and I select AUX from the source selection, whatever is plugged in to the AUX port with be accessed.

Looks like @JFox562 was right. Here was their email response.

Our harness will allow you to add an audio auxiliary input to the RAV 4,
once installed AUX will appear on the screen as source. Our unit has two
RCA wires to convert it to a jack you will need a part like the one in
the link below. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank You

I'm going to give it a try. Like I said $100 is a little steep but if it accomplished the task it'll be worth it to me. Also according to the website they are based out of Brooklyn. I wouldn't be surprised if the part is manufactured in China but with their confirmation email I feel safe taking the gamble and will just do a charge-back if it happens to fail and they happen to be disagreeable with a return.

I'll update when I have it in hand.

Out of curiosity, when you "reorder" your sources, is there an AUX listed?

The reason I ask is that's how I found out that there was a USB 2 source which then only shows once a hub in plugged in.

Hopefully it shows and this is what the manufacturer of the device is utilizing since there isn't a physical AUX port on your RAV4. If it's there, then I would be much more hopeful that the add-on device will work.

If it does, then you'll need to research to get the 2019 USB/Aux port as a replacement since I would imagine that the opening hasn't changed.

Good luck

Good luck
There is no aux listed currently on my sources list when I re-order them. Hoping it just magically appears like the email implies and from the sounds of it how the USB2 works. As for access I'll probably just mount the amazon thing they linked someplace more convenient and skip the stock look. I like the idea of it being the same as the 2019 but in practical use I don't really like the positioning of the port.

Success! Installed the harness and sure enough the AUX option is now available!

Installation was pretty easy. Hardest part was prying off the cover behind the radio.
Steps:
1. Pry cover
2. Remove 4 screws (2 on each side of radio)
3. Pry radio (there are two retaining clips on the bottom near the air vents)
4. Remove connector from radio
5. Insert one end of the harness into the radio, attach the other end to the removed connector so the harness is now in line.
6. Connect chosen RCA cables and route where you want.
7. Test connection - Reinstall radio in reverse order.
8. Profit.

The last pic is just my temporary spot until I decide where I want to drill and permanently mount. Two more pics since I ran out of room.

So your gamble paid off. Congratulations

Since the harness looks like they just added wires to probably empty pins coming from the radio and no additional circuitry, there isn't any reason for Toyota to remove this connection. I would recommend replacing your USB data connection port assembly with one like in my 2019 so it looks stock and easily accessible. If I get a chance after lunch, I will look online using my VIN to see if I can locate the part number for the complete USB/Aux port for mine. I was going to buy a replacement so I had in for the future since I can only imagine the USB connection could wear out over time. I will let you know what I find. Thanks for the pictures too, visuals are always great to have as reference.

UPDATE
Well, I found everything else in that area including the cigarette lighter port, but no USB/Aux port. It's as if it doesn't exist. There are 5 different assembly drawings and they all show that there is only a cigarette lighter port in that area. Yes, I entered my VIN and it's the official Toyota Parts Online site. I thought I had found it in the past but I have nothing in my archives.

Thanks for trying this out and posting, and congrats on the successful install. I may just have to give it a try on my 2021 w/JBL. Is there sufficient gap to route straight down to the where the USB data port is? I'm looking at this adapter, the end looks small enough to mount into the tray near the USB port:

There is a lot of space but I doubt you'll be able to align it properly unless you take some more panels off (Vents, climate control, etc). I plan doing a better install later, just wanted to make sure it worked today and play around with it before it got too hot... (90-100 degrees today).

Looks like the part number for the combined USB/AUX is 86190-12040. Just went ahead and ordered one from eBay for $87 shipped from the Middle East, which appeared to be the best price around. When it arrives I will post detailed instructions for wiring it into the factory harness, should be far less expensive than that $100 cable!!!

Just an FYI, my 2019 Limited has the combo USB/Aux port. I checked about 20 OEM parts web sites and all but one said this will not fit my RAV4. I will be very interest if this is the correct part when you get it in since I've been looking to get an extra. I figure this is a wear and tear item and will eventually wear out. Thanks for the info. and yes, I agree, this should be a $50 max item.

Hey JFox562, I would appreciate if you could do me a favour. Can you get to the connector going into the rear of the jack and take a photo of the 5-wire connector, and see if it has a part number stamped into the connector housing. I believe it is a 7-pin with the two outer pins unpopulated, and to me it looks like a 90980-11794 but would like to confirm.

Looking at the wiring diagrams confirms that it is indeed a 7-pin with pins 1 and 7 unpopulated. Checking the radio connectors on the 2021 Prime shows an identical connector layout with the pins going to the AUX jack simply disconnected.

In the meantime, I ordered 25 feet of 4-conductor shielded cable from these guys, should just need the connector housing for the AUX end and the pins for the radio-side connector now.
