Actually there is no center differential at all. The car is in front wheel drive until the electro-coupler mounted on the rear differential starts transferring partial power to the rear. Less parts = less weight & less mechanical loss.

aha thanks. otherwise the front and rear axles are open diffs?

Yep, except that TRAC attempt to "lock" the diffs by braking a spinning wheel.
