My 2004 Rav has 36,000 miles on it. I've checked the front discs and there doesn't seem to be any marking on them from worn pads. How many miles is the norm to get on the original front pads?

I got 60K on my first set of pads before I replaced them, and even then they weren't worn all the way down to the indicators.

I am at 60,000kms on original set and I have about 8mm left on the front and 5mm on the rear drums. The toyota tech said I can get about another year or 20,000km if I am careful.

I brake all year round as if I am braking in the winter. Gently slowing down when I can rather than hammering the brake(course if you have ABS you kinda need to press firmly for it to work right), as I dont have ABS or EBD.
