In order to register my R4 in California I had to get a smog check because I bought it from an out-of-state dealer - even though it is brand new and a 50-State vehicle.

The tech plugged his machine into the open plug next to the hood release lever in the driver's compartment. And lo and behold it passed the smog test!

Thanks California I really did not know what to do with that $41 and now I can rest easy knowing that I am not a polluter.

FYI - if you purchased your car in California, the first smog check would not be required until 2012. Old law required that first smog check was due 4 years after model year, then every other year after that, but new law initiated this year delays first smog check to 6 years after model year, then every other year after that.
