Camshaft Position Sensor???

1154 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  eodgator
I have a 1997 Rav and can't find the camshaft position sensor. Every online forum or thread I've read jumps to pictures and posts about the 1998 Rav and newer models. Does the 97 have a sensor for the cam and if so.... WHERE???!!!! Ugghh!

I'm pretty sure that there isn't a separate cam position sensor on a '97. You have a distributor so the cam sensor shouldn't be needed. The pickup in the distributor handles the job of knowing when to make a spark.

If you want to double check that the timing belt hasn't jumped a tooth or check the base timing, put a timing light in cylinder #1 spark plug lead, jumper the appropriate pins on the DLC-1 diag connector, and point the light at the crankshaft pulley and verify that it is 10° at idle.

Sorry I wasn't paying attention that RockAuto substituted my search with a crankshaft position sensor.

I wasn't thinking, no you don't have a camshaft position sensor. You have a distributor, that serves the same purpose.
THANK YOU!!! I was beginning to wonder if it was even there! I'll have to go out and rent me timing light. I'll give that a try. I may have slipped a little in setting the belt. Let's hope thats it!

Did you install the timing belt the Toyota way? Do it like this: DIY - Timing belt
