If you are experiencing the issue of a gear shifter in your Rav4 that feels stretched or spongey, and wants to go past the gear position then chances are the shift cables are bad and need to be replaced. The cables are expensive to replace, even doing it your self.

I came up with a cheap "fix" that works to improve the shifter but is not as good as replacing the cables.
I cut and shaped a small piece of plastic that I installed just in front of the metal shift leaver as a stop for the shifter. I used a 2 part epoxy to affix it to the shifter bace.

The 1996 2 door Rav4 I did this mod to belongs to my buddies daughter. She has been driving it now for about 5 months and says it is working great for her. I drove it the other day and found it to shift just fine without issue :)

Hope this is a help to you guys and gets you down the road with smooth shifts:D

Here are the next pics for the DIY

Take note to the 4th picture, you will see there is a radious to plastic. The radius allows for smooth side to side movement/shifts.
