I have noticed that my brakes make a short chirping sound only when released from a stop, no squeaking or grinding otherwise.

Is this a sign that I probably need new brakes? or really nothing to worry about.

thanks

Hi Colin, My 2007 4cyl Rav rear brakes make a sort-of chirping noise, but only when driven cold, and in reverse? It goes away when the car warms up? I can't figure it out.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance, Brendan.

Hey thanks. I just uploaded a video to better show what is happening. It happens pretty much all the time. Cold, hot, does not matter.

Other info on the vehicle. its a 2000 rave 2wd automatic

here is link to the video

Can you get this squeak just sitting in Park and pressing the brake pedal or do you have to be moving?

If you have drum brakes in the rear, the squeak is most likely caused by a lack of grease between the backing plate and the corresponding point on the brake shoe.

just service your brakes, remove the rotors, check your parking brake.

you will know if that sound really coming from.

have someone to press that brake pedal for you whilst checking underneath.
