just got the 97 rav 4.

on newer cars i use cruise a lot because i drive on boring highways and i have a heavy foot.

anyone have issues with the cruise in their first gen rav4s?

I don't want to get into a bad situation, like the speed not unlocking.

Toyota cruise control systems are usually well mannered.
I've only had one problem in the 3 years I've had my Rav and it was my fault. I was approaching a stop sign and since the drive train was unloaded, I just slide it out of gear without the clutch and didn't think about the cruise control until it red-lined the engine trying to speed up a little.

I guess being made in Japan it didn't understand the Georgia over-drive.

Either you trust your RAV4 or you don't.

What if the wheels suddenly fall of ? etc..etc.. :D

I drive in my almost 200k RAV4 around the whole USA. It has never let me down.

Works perfectly fine on my 97 5-speed, 178k. With the vacuum actuated systems, I think the larger age related concern is a leak resulting in the cruise control not wanting to engage or maintain speed. Runaway with the power output of these motors at highway speed isn't exactly terrifying either.
