This article is based upon data from the German Insurance Association. Some car immobilizers can be defeated in less than an hour due to weak encryption. It would take a somewhat sophisticated thief to do this.

I'm not worried about anyone hacking the immobilizer on my RAV4. This same technology is used on much more expensive cars. Those owners might need to worry some day. This article is just another example of criminals adapting to whatever anti-theft devices that manufactures develop.
