Hey, even dropouts need a job.
I know people who decide not to work, even if educated.
If not for the auto-industry, where else to you think high school kids or dropouts work?

Yes, I'm being sarcastic but I will be if we keep suggesting the employees are uneducated.
They may not be the proper person to change oil, however they should also be taught by the senior staff of the correct procedure.
If an oil change tech at a dealership does not know the proper procedure then it is fault of the service manager for not training the tech.
If the tech is instructed to add 5 quarts of oil to a vehicle requiring 4.5, then it is not at all on the tech. They have done as instructed. If they program the filler to go with 4.5 quarts and there is an engine failure later that week, it is the techs fault and will be fired for using his brain and doing it 'right'.

Anyone in the service department should know where the oil is supposed to be on the dipstick. They see these cars all day long. They see these cars brand new as delivered from the factory.

My RAV4 was delivered brand new with the oil level right on the money. Not a little over, not a little under.

When I change my own oil, to get the oil level to be exactly at the full mark, like it was when it was made at the factory, it takes 4.5 quarts.

While certainly you want to leave time for all the old oil to drain out before filling, I believe the 5 minutes wait time is to allow the new oil to drain down to the oil pan so that an accurate reading can take place,

I started a previous thread about my RAV 4 Hybrid being overfilled with oil, after the 10,000 mile Toyota service.
Oil level on the dipstick was a 1/4 inch over upper mark, when cold. Motor oil warm, level was 1/2 inch over upper dipstick mark.

My dealer, where the car was purchased (a 2 hour drive) didn't really seem to care, even though they did the oil service.
I don't have any jacks, so I went to a closer dealer and paid $23 to get the oil level drained down. I spoke to the mechanic who did the work, and he said he drained 1/2 a quart of excess oil.
Even now , with a cold engine, oil level is right at the upper mark on dipstick.

Sure, a little overfilled won’t kill your engine, but why not just put the right amount in?
The right amount is somewhere between the minimum normal and maximum normal oil level marks, but everyone acts like you have to make sure the oil levels is at the maximum normal mark, which is very difficult to achieve with precision. It is best to target the half way mark between low and high for when both engine and oil are cold. That way there is enough headroom to account for oil/engine expansion as the engine and oil warm up, not 100% leveled parking surface, and/or oil dilution.

In my experience 4.5 quarts is actually a bit much. You are supposed to check the level after the oil and engine are fully warmed up and at least 5 minutes after shutting off the engine. That's 30 to 45 minutes of driving. It takes a long time for both oil and engine to be fully warmed up. We are not talking about the coolant temperature. Even so, I leave some room for potential oil dilution.
I’ve been changing my own oil for almost 30 years and worked at Jiffy Lube in high school and college.

Let the engine sit for a few minutes after it’s warmed up and check it. I know that.

It absolutely does not take 30-45 minutes of driving for the oil to reach operating temperature.

In my experience, 4.5 quarts is perfect.

after draining the oil wait 5 mins start the car for 5-10 secs to clear out the extra oil then pour oil to the mark start the car up again for about 1 min then check were the oil is done, really isn't that hard and its more about taking pride in what you do no matter how small or big the task is at the sametime i get it if the dealer are using filler machines that are only designed to shoot full on quarts in and no half way mark.

Mods, can we shut this down? Once again, an oil thread has devolved into child-like behavior. I don't know what it is with you people/this forum and being unspeakably passionate about oil change procedures.

Agreed. I hadn't been following this thread but like many others once a simple subject goes on too long it runs off the road into a ditch. Closed! And will be pruned.
