Can I safely use a portable jump starter on my Rav4 Prime? If so, anything special I should look for or look out for?
Not sure if the Primes engine bay is similar to the hybrid but if so, do not connect the negative clamp anywhere near the ECU. The issue with most jump packs is the cables are too short to reach the factory ground point on the passenger side of the engine. Can I safely use a portable jump starter on my Rav4 Prime? as in, access the battery terminals in the trunk? I haven't looked carefully at that setup, can they be clamped onto? One way, although more difficult, to mitigate both issues mentioned is to use the manual hatch release inside the car and jump directly to the battery.
what is type S? google isn't readily helping me out here.your hybrid requires small trickle of current to power electronics and lights only. your traction battery will provide the power to spin the engine. I had a jump starter that would not provide trickle current meaning in order to activate it was looking for a huge current draw to spin the engine. fortunately a friend had 'type s' jump starter from Costco that worked and I carry it with me since then.
Yes, I plan on connecting directly to the battery in the trunk to avoid ECU damage. The battery is small so I see no reason why the clamps on most jump packs would not work. Certainly worth a trial run though.as in, access the battery terminals in the trunk? I haven't looked carefully at that setup, can they be clamped onto?
yeah, I'm just wondering about how accessible the terminals are and if there will be any obstructions. I haven't removed the panels to look at the battery back there to confirm exactly what it looks like.Yes, I plan on connecting directly to the battery in the trunk to avoid ECU damage. You may want to check the water level (add distilled water if needed) of the battery and grease the terminals while you are there. I believe all primes and J Vinn Hybrids have flooded batteries. My plan is to extend the life of the expensive 12 volt aux battery as much as possible.yeah, I'm just wondering about how accessible the terminals are and if there will be any obstructions. flooded like they put too much water in the battery? I've never checked a battery water level. google says there is an indicator that "glows" on the top of the battery? how have I missed this all of my life???You may want to check the water level (add distilled water if needed) of the battery and grease the terminals while you are there. No flooded meaning that it uses water and electrolytes which evaporate or something to that effect over time. Others can chime in with the technical answer but a "flooded" battery may need to be topped off over time with distilled water.flooded like they put too much water in the battery? Interesting, I will need to try and measure my AntiGravity XP-10HD's current output and see what I can find out or email Antigravity.your hybrid requires small trickle of current to power electronics and lights only. your traction battery will provide the power to spin the engine. okay but does type S just refer to a current rating? what does it mean?Interesting, I will need to try and measure my AntiGravity XP-10HD's current output and see what I can find out or email Antigravity.
@CoffeeBear I think @Eldorado19h is stating that some jump packs will not work on a Toyota 12 volt hybrid battery because there is not enough current draw demand from the car in order to activate the jump pack's output circuit?
For example, if one plugs in a small LED light bulb into a 15 Amp outlet, the LED bulb will draw about .05 Amp of current while on the same 15 amp maximum outlet (circuit), a 1000 watt light bulb will draw 8.6 Amps.
I believe S type is a brand of Jump Pack that worked for @Eldorado19h while another brand did not work.okay but does type S just refer to a current rating? what does it mean?
ah! when I saw it in the amazon listing I missed that it was the brand. I thought it was some kind of rating system for jump packsI believe S type is a brand of Jump Pack that worked for @Eldorado19h while another brand did not work.
At first glance, I suspect that either bad contact was made with the original jump pack or the positive clamp's wire side was connected to the plastic side of the jump port, but I have been wrong in the past. I just emailed my Jump Pack manufacturer for their take on this.
They're the same.Do the 12V batteries in these have the same 2 to 3 year lifespan as the 12V batteries in regular ICE cars or are they special batteries that last longer?
